Jay-Z Full 38 Min Performance @ Glastonbury

There was a bit of controversy stirred up by the band Oasis when the shows managers chose Jay Z as the headliner for the show to bring in a younger crowd. Noel Gallagher of the band Oasis reportedly said that hip hop didn't belong at Glasonbury and that the show was “built on the tradition of guitar music”. Jay Z responded by saying, “At the end of the day, these barriers that they have are only put up to separate us. There is only good music and bad music.” Jigga even went so far as to open the show singing, "Wonderwall" Oasis' most famous song and played the guitar. Priceless.

Jay-Z Wants A Piece Of The New York Yankees

Jay-Z is looking to expand his investment portfolio. The Hip Hop Mogul is looking to buy shares of the New York Yankees from a private seller. It was discovered in an interview with TimeOut London Magazine that he was interested in taking a piece of the New York Yankees. Jay-Z made a statement in the interview.
‘I had invested in the Nets, and they [Arsenal] asked me if I was interested in investing. But I get that from time to time. Someone told me yesterday that someone else had a piece of the New York Yankees – “We wanna talk to you, yadda yadda yadda.” I mean, I love the Yankees so I’m in the middle of following that through, but sometimes it comes to be something and sometimes it comes to be nothing. That was one of the times it came to nothing.’

Wikipedia Causing Students To Fail

Apparently students in Scotland are failing and they're blaming it all on Wikipedia and "other internet sources", but you know Wikipedia is the only one that matters.
WIKIPEDIA and other online research sources were blamed yesterday for Scotland's falling exam pass rates. The Scottish Parent Teacher Council (SPTC) said pupils are turning to websites and internet resources that contain inaccurate or deliberately misleading information before passing it off as their own work. Standard Grade pass rates were down for the first time in four years last year and the SPTC is now calling for pupils to be given lessons on using the internet appropriately for additional research purposes "before the problem gets out of hand".So what does this mean for us in the US? Are they shutting down Wikipedia? If they do, I don't know about you, but I won't make it.[via news.scotland.com]

Playing in the Snow

I know the photo has gotten everyones attention so I guess I should explain. Every Wednesday we will be taking a scheduled break from urban pop culture to see what's poppin' on the "other" side. Whether is a crotch shot from Brit or Amy Winehouse's funeral we'll let you know. You know, If you think about it, Lenzism really is the only entertainment website you need to go to... :-). And as always, please let us know what you think in the comments section.
Check out what's poppin' under the cut:
- The Hills star Audrina Patridge makes the cover of TV Guide as one of TV's hottest bods. ET catches up with her and she shares her workout secrets. I'm going to guess that it has something to do cocaine and OCD.... Everybody Nose Audrina!
- Apparently Amy Winehouse doesn't really have emphysema like her dad says. Just low level signs of it. You know what. I'm about to try crack crack cause it's lookin' like this b*tch is going to live forever.
- The top 10 from American Idol go on tour. Yeah that's it. That's the story...
- There's been some changes to Britney Spears' custody agreement with her ex Kevin Federline. Looks like she gets overnight visits with her children. I assume that means she's allowed to take them to the club with her.
- Nicole Richie says that she owes her new outlook on life to her new baby Harlow. Yeah that's healthy. Having a baby for your own therapy.
- Check out some spy shots of J. Lo and her husband Marc Anothy. You can clearly see how she maintains all that ass. Marc Anthony ain't gettin' a bite to eat!

New Music: Akon-Clap Again
Omarion's Got A New Home

Omarion is back starting fresh on a new record label called Mosley Music Group, owned by super producer Timberland. Omarion’s debut album on the record label is slated to release before the end of the year. Timberland is set to take on the role as executive producer the project.
Omarion was dropped by Columbia Records last April. On his time at Columbia Records Omarion hasn't brought much such success to his album sales. Omarion released two solo albums for the record company including 2005’s ‘O’ and 2006’s ‘21.’ Both albums which only went certified gold. In December of 2007, Omarion partnered with Bow Wow on the album, ‘Face Off.’ The album was very much a failure considering it only sold 329,348 units.

HAUTE MESS: Keri Hilson [and some others too!]

First let me just say...KERI HILSON, LENZISM LOVES YOU...and we want you to dress better! Every other time we've seen you- you've looked cool and hip but this time a stylist has gone terribly wrong. We really don't think it's your fault, Keri, but you're just the poor soul that had to wear this get up. Velvet in the Los Angeles heat? Really horrible! I'm not sure whether she was going for the Beattles/ 60's style mushroom bob or not but that curl is just a little too voluminous the Vidal Sassoon 5-point hair cut would have been a better ode to the era! I just don't get the concept of this fit' - she's normally so much more put together! Oh well, we all fall short sometimes but that doesn't excuse this mess :(
More messes after the jump!
Does this kid ever learn? EWWWW... what an abuse of designer lables!
Little Mama looks like the original Candy Girl; since when did she become the spokesperson for Lollipop Kids for America?
Is it just me or does he look dirty? Can we say 'haircut' or at least a line up- i mean geez?

Haute Flash: N*E*R*D is All Over Milan Fashion Week
Literally weeks from its release, the N*E*R*D's third album, Seeing Sounds, is already making waves beyond the shores of the U.S. The spring/summer menswear collections for 2009 have begun in Milan Fashion Week and the N*E*R*D's funk rock sound has been resonating off the runways of Dolce & Gabbana's recent menswear show. Seeing Sounds definitely has a European-influenced sound as seen in tracks like "Everybody Nose," "You Know What," and "Yeah You" so I'm not surprised when I heard Pharrell's melodic voice accompanying those models as they sashayed down the runway. If European club kids and fashion luminaries like Dolce & Gabbana are embracing N*E*R*D in such fashion, hopefully this talented band can go platinum for once in their home country!
See part 2 of the Dolce & Gabbana show below.
The Rundown

- Soulja Boy shows off his house and his toys with a homemade cribs video. At least we know he isn't spending him money like crazy...
- Lolo's Cube isn't happy with Estelle's choice of argyle for the red carpet. My main concern is her accessory: those braces. I seem to remember hearing some static about her American management wanting her grill to straighten up its act and her refusal. I guess America beats the Brit's again!
- BlogXilla takes a break from the gossip for a minute and talk about dating single parents.
- SisterToldja figures out exactly why soul food costs so damn much. Be careful though, this is dangerous thinking...
- Check out some behind the scenes photos of Beyonce' and her co-star Idris Elba on the set of their new film Obsessed.
- Trey Songz ditches his braids for a new image. The world is still unimpressed with anything that he does.

Haute Flash: Erykah Badu is the Face of Tom Ford's White Patchouli

Vogue Italia released their all-black issue this July and it seems that the epic issue's message of appreciating Black models and beauty is being heeded in the fashion industry. Tom Ford’s ad campaign for the new fragrance, White Patchouli, is being spearheaded by African American vocalist, Erykah Badu. For a musician and a relative novice in the fashion industry, Badu’s collaboration with Tom Ford may bode well for the diversity issues plaguing fashion right now. This comes as a surprise to me since Badu is not a bonafide model, but she was able to land this job. Maybe things are changing...

Haute Flash: Patricia Fields for HSN

How freakin' haute is this? First you can get killer Patricia Fields styles at Payless, now you can shop from home? This is amazing! The collection, called the House of Field, will launch on the Home Shopping Network on September 23 [tell me we don't put you on the that new new sh!t].The collection, designed by Field and longtime House of Field designer David Dalrymple, will consist of 50 pieces ranging from sportswear and denim to dresses and accessories.
If you're wondering if the line with be Sex and the City-ish - you're darn skippy!
According to Mindy Grossman, HSN's chief executive officer, "This collection is very accessible, with something for everyone. We have the iconic flower dress from the beginning scene in the Sex and the City movie, but we are also selling the flower as a pin, so customers can have just a piece of what we are offering."
Aha, I'm excited already- that dress was one of the most fabulous pieces in the movie. It should be interesting to see how the high priced styles of SATC translates into the $39 to $199 pricepoints for the collection. Looks like House of Fields will hardly break the bank!

Haute Mess: I Feel For You Chaka, I Really Do

For someone who has won countless Grammy Awards and toured the world over, why should you be looking a haute mess at any performance! Please, someone arrest Chaka Khan's stylists because they did her so wrong!!!
Promoting her recent Grammy Award winning album, Funk This, in Sydney, Chaka Khan came out in this Michelin Man-inspired outfit that breaks everything single fashion rule that ever existed. Granted that horizontal stripes are in this summer, but when it comes to women and dressing in a flattering yet appropriate manner, never, ever, ever wear horizontal stripes below the waist! In Chaka Khan's case, she took it to the extreme with a full-body ensemble complete with leather horizontal stripes! This definitely did not bode well for her physique at all, drawing attention to all the wrong places!

Ashanti Kills
CurrentTV did a short piece on the whole Ashanti "Gotcha Gram" fiasco. If you're not familiar, Ashanti launched a viral marketing campaign to promote the release of her new album. The campaign involved creating a fake news report of copy cat murders popping up after viewers saw the graphic violence in her video for "The Way That I Love You". Because of the graphic images in the video people demanded that the website be taken down and even went so far as threatening to disrupt Ashanti's performance of during the NBA Finals. Seriously.
Check out a bootleg video of the infamous video under the cut.

Haute Flash: Reality Show Stylista Sneak Peak
Wednesday nights will be full of "fashion" on The CW Network this Fall. Stylista, being toted as a reality version of The Devil Wears Prada, will see the light of day this Fall as a companion piece to Tyra Banks‘ America’s Next Top Model. Stylista follows eleven fashion mavens as they vie for a shot at an editorial job with Elle Magazine. Each episode features the fashionistas carrying out an assistant’s task and a fashion editorial assignment in a series of style-related challenges.
Contestants will work as assistants to Elle’s fashion news director, Anne Slowey. Anne will fire one person each week until the last assistant is left standing.
Stylista’s $100,000 grand prize package includes an editorial position at Elle Magazine, a paid lease on a Manhattan apartment, and a one year clothing allowance at H&M.- popcrunch.com
From the previews I'm more than less enthused about this show. As an assistant in fashion publishing I can tell you that while there are a few Devil Wears Prada moments this show is highly dramatized and very unrealistic. Watching this show is going to annoy me to no end. The ratings are probably going to be pretty high though- either way, enjoy.

Lil Wayne Forming Supergroup With T-Pain

I'm gonna pray to God that this is not Face Off part two...
One is hip-hop's king of collaborations. The other is his R&B equivalent.
For once, you can believe the rumors: Lil Wayne and T-Pain indeed have plans to
form a supergroup.
Weezy confirmed the report with a simple "Yeah" on
Monday in Los Angeles, where he was filming his spot in Cassie's new video
"Official Girl" before he performed later in the day at a sold-out House of
Blues.
Continue reading under the cut:
"We both have the same energy," he said. "I don't sleep. If you
ask anybody, I don't sleep. I think it's the cousin of death. As much as you
sleep, you're impersonating death to me. He don't sleep. I play all day. He
plays all day and all night. The connection is crazy. He loves to be creative,
he loves to work; I love to create, I love to work. He really wants people to
respect his rapping; I really want people to respect my harmonizing."

BlackBerry Javelin Caught On Video
The BlackBerry Javelin is one of the newer series of BlackBerry's set to release this summer. It's very similar to the BlackBerry Bold with a few minor exceptions. The BlackBerry Javelin will have an outstanding set of features packed in it's slim casing. The Javelin will have Wi-Fi and GPS but unfortunately no 3G. Other upgrades will be Javelin will a slightly better camera aiming at 3.2 megapixels, bigger display, and more spaced out keys.
The Blackberry Javelin is suppose to be an alternative to the Blackberry Bold. It's stated to be the "cheaper version" due to the lack of 3G. Many sources have claimed The Blackberry Bold it will hit AT&T in July for $300, T-Mobile in September for $350, and Verizon and Sprint also in September for $300 all with a 2 year contract. So look out for it to be a little bit cheaper than the prices above.

Music Video: Young Chris - Never Die (Classic Roc-A-Fella)
Peep the new video entitled "Never Die" from Young Chris (one half of the Young Gunz) off his upcoming album, Now Or Never. The beat and visuals in the video maintain a chilling and somber mood from start to finish. However, the sprightly chimes heard at the beginning and subtly throughout the track lends hope to Young Chris' claims that the "Roc's still alive/ just pray to God that we never die."
Young Chris is heavily underrated and "Never Die" definitely hearkens us back to the soulful sounding Jay-Z of Reasonable Doubt. I'm sure Now or Never will reignite that old Roc-A-Fella sound we've all missed terribly.

Warning: This video is so gay that while watching it my eyes actually started to sweat glitter.
There's so much going on in this video that I don't know where to start... There are however three questions that I need answered that I am afraid I will never know:
- Who is that white man in the suit and why is he grinning so hard?
- What's up with the African dancers in the background?
- Why?

New Lloyd Video "Girls All Around The World" feat. Lil Wayne
R&B crooner, Lloyd of Murder Inc. is back with his new single, "Girls All Around the World", off his soon to be released third album called "Lessons in Love". This track is definitely a good look for Lloyd who often does well with this laid back chill songs like its predecessors "You" (which also featured Lil Wayne) and the latter, "Get it Shawty". The song is blowing up at urban radio and is featured pretty heavily in the clubs. Look for Lloyd to release his new album on August 5th. For now, enjoy the video for the track which is very visually appealing.

Street Style: Urban Tribal Flair

Name: Maya Amina Spotted: J*Davey Concert at S.O.B.'s in NYC
It was just a matter of time before this happened, but our stylish street-walker actually created her cute one piece! We all know that tribal prints is a trend that definitely on the come up and is so big this season, and Maya Amina definitely styled her fit perfectly. I love the pairing of the simplistic gold bangles, Gucci satchel, the gold name chain, and the BK bamboos- it's such a great blend of urban and native fashions fused with a very modern silhouette. She actually creates these garments by hand with her company Boxing Kitten and has done pieces for Erykah Badu, J*Davey, and DJ Rashida.
See more pics and video below from the concert and from Boxing Kitten

Music group, Heavy, they were so haute- check them out!

All New Lows: Nick and Mariah Cannon Submit Registry at Bergdorf Goodman

I'm convinced a shared sense of tackiness brought these two together. If Nick Cannon could recycle an engagement ring, then this despicable move to setup a wedding registry with new wife Mariah Carey at Bergdorf Goodman doesn't surprise me at all.
Inside sources claim that Mariah Carey's assistant sent out emails to more than 100 of Carey's wealthiest chums informing them that she registered at Bergdorf Goodman and would appreciate their gifts. Funnily enough, many of these friends were not even given the common courtesy to receive an invitation to Mariah and Nick's off-the-cuff wedding at Mariah's Bahamas' estate. The supposed big wedding party the couple were meant to host upon returning from the Bahamas ended up being a pathetic amusement park getaway where friends and family were invited. Personally, I would not feel inclined to give any type of present to a couple that invited me to Six Flags--I can frequent Six Flags on my own time!
As for the registry, some of the extravagant gifts on the list include "fine china, very expensive silver stemware" among other things. So I'm guessing with the spur-of-the-moment wedding tryst to Bahamas and the somewhat corny twilight honeymoon at Six Flag Magic Mountain, Nick's pockets are to hurt to afford basic household amenities. Poor chap!

Usher Denies Firing His Mom

New daddy Usher is saying he didn't fire his mama. He tells this month's Vibe he simply 'retired' her to being a full-time granmother.
My mother and I decided to change her situation, together," he tells July's Vibe. "I decided to not fire, not get rid of but ... to retire her to be a full-time grandmother.
Apparently somebody needs to learn that volunteering someone to quit IS firing them. And this is clearly just a sad attempt to distract everyone from those divorce rumors that are flying.

Haute Flash: Eva Mendes Has TV Execs Panties in a Bunch

Fresh out of rehab, Eva Mendes is making headlines, but for all the right reasons in my opinion. Too bad TV executives at several networks don't share the same sentiment! Mendes recently shot a TV ad with renowned photographer Steven Meisel for Calvin Klein's new fragrance, Secret Obsession, and TV networks are frazzled over the content of the ad and have moved to censor much of the commercial.
Women's Wear Daily had this to say concerning the networks' distaste over the ads.
What's got the censors upset? Well, evidently a combination of what Mendes says — and doesn't say — layered with provocative music and lots of skin.
However, Catherine Walsh, senior vice president of American fragrances for Coty Prestige, who oversee the Calvin Klein Fragrances license, had this to say about the fracas.
"Every time we do TV [with the Calvin brand] it comes back with some sort of push-back from the networks — but nothing like this. This time," she vowed, "we're going to fight."
Fortunately, Mendes has the backing of Calvin Klein which only speaks to the leaps and bounds the star is making since checking out of rehab earlier this year. Funnily enough, the brouhaha these TV execs are making over Mendes' risqué TV ad pale in comparison to the bare naked display Mendes did for PETA (see below)! These TV networks just need to take heed of previous run-ins with overt displays of sex (i.e., Janet Jackson's half-time peep show at Super Bowl 38) and realize no real harm comes of it.
Secret Obsession is set to hit stores mid-September and the print and TV ads (if certain panties are unraveled) will also follow suit around the same time period.

Street Style: Introducing Summer Trends -- Floppy Hats
Record high temperatures are being clocked in cities across the U.S. so you know those vermin's in the form of UV rays are out and about. Sunblock is a good start, but an added layer of protection can be found in a lovely summer hat that is not too stifling as a protective cover. Some hats tend to have that overbearing/irritating nature (i.e., straw hats), but a wide-brimmed floppy hat steers clear of that and really puts you in line for being both Ă la mode and health-conscious!
The folks over at My Fashion Life tossed up some choice options if your looking to consummate that summer outfit with a floppy hat that has that resort-chic appeal. Mull over My Fashion Life's suggestions plus use this fashionable denizen pictured above as a reminder of how workable the look is. Enjoy and stay protected!

Blast from the Past: Coolio Arrested...Rember Him?
In F-List celebrity news, oft-arrested 90s rapper and Internet TV cooking show host Coolio (born Artis Leon Ivey, Jr.) was stopped in his 1996(!) Hummer last night for a minor traffic violation, but was later arrested after the cops ran his licence and found out he had warrants for driving on a suspended. He was taken to lockup and bail has been set at 10 thousand dollars.![]()
Isn't 10 thousand dollars just a little excessive? I hope Coolio saved enough of that Gangster's Paradise money to get himself out of this one. If he's still driving a car from the mid-90s he probably has most of his money in the bank right?
But then, the 90s were a while ago...
Side note: Coolio, are we STILL rocking the braids after they went out and came back twice already since the 90s? Please, PLEASE come into 2008.

Haute or Not: Eyelashes for Miles with New Cosmetic Drug

"Manicure? Check. Pedicure? Check. Eyebrows? Check. Eyelashes? Oh, sorry there's no need. I'm taking Lumigan for that."
Yes, soon mascara and fake eyelashes will be a thing of the past once Allergan, the makers of Botox, release a drug geared towards growing eyelashes. The drug, known as Lumigan, is used to stall the progression of glaucoma in the eyes, but it has an added benefit of elongating those eyelashes of yours.
Allergan is seeking approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Lumigan since they feel this product will wet the appetites of consumers in medical aesthetic marketplace.
Well, if Botox is your thing then this new cosmetic touch-up will sit well with you despite all the noted side effects of Lumigan's active ingredient, bimatoprost. Darkening around the eyes (permanent bags are not sexy) or a complete change in ones' eye color (why contacts exist) are some of the risks the FDA have outlined! Ummm...I'd stick to lash extensions!

Music Video: Solange - I Decided
"I Decided", produced by Pharell, is the first single from Solange Knowles' sophomore release SoL-AngeL and The Hadley Street Dreams. The album will be released on August 26th from her new label home Geffen Records.
I've got to admit that I'm not the biggest Solange fan simply because... It's Solange but from what I hear she might have done something right the second time around.

Haute or Not: Statuesque Naomi Campbell Poses Quadruple Trouble?!

If her new role as the face of Yves Saint Laurent wasn't enough to gas Naomi Campbell, I'm sure the recent exploits of British fashion photographer, Nick Knight, in creating several statues of Ms. Campbell will solidify her status in fashion and the world quite literally!
In regards to the nature of the sculptures, The Independent had this to say courtesy of Knight:
He scanned Campbell "straddling the barrel of a large tank" which will form one sculpture. Another will be a "circle of three Naomis, like The Three Graces", but designed to be viewed from within the circle and in a darkened room.
I think the world is fine with one ill-mannered Naomi Campbell--four more might send airport staff into a panic! The unveiling of these 30 ft. tall Naomi's will be a spectacle and I can't begin to imagine the type of reception they will receive. Hopefully all the victims of Campbell's assault cases over the years don't treat it as a urinal!

Obama To The Rescue

Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois sealed the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, a historic step toward his once-improbable goal of becoming the nation's first black president. A defeated Hillary Rodham Clinton maneuvered for the vice presidential spot on his fall ticket.
Obama's victory set up a five-month campaign with Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a race between a 46-year-old opponent of the Iraq War and a 71-year-old former Vietnam prisoner of war and staunch supporter of the current U.S. military mission.
Obama, a first-term senator who was virtually unknown on the national stage four years ago, defeated Clinton, the former first lady and one-time campaign front-runner, in a 17-month marathon for the Democratic nomination.[via Associated Press]

Danity Kane Sexy Swimsuits
Sadly though I'm going to have to agree with Bossip that D. Woods is looking a little tranny-esque (it's a real word, look it up) in the above photo. It might be that strong chin or that strong forehead but there's a lot of testosterone at work on that face in this photo.

Leona Lewis Covers Blender Magazine

"Bleeding Love" singer Leona Lewis covers the June issue of Blender Magazine.
In the article Lewis talks about how incredibly boring her personal life is stating that she doesn't drink, do drugs, wear leather, or even diamonds....:
When I was 18, I had a few glasses of Alcopop--they're bubblegummy drinks with a bit of alcohol--and it was gross," Lewis says. "I've tasted champagne, which is gross. And I tasted wine, which I don't like. I might be quite boring.Don't you dare judge me Leona! Don't you dare...

Haute Mess: Loose Cannon Naomi is New Face of YSL

When things like this happen, characters like Naomi Campbell will never learn their lesson. On the heels of being charged with six counts of assault, Campbell has been announced as the new face of French fashion house Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) replacing close friend Kate Moss. Campbell is looking at either a six month stint in the slammer or a fine of £21,000 if found guilty of assaulting a police office, mind you, at Heathrow Airport! Thank God for Campbell's supermodel status because an incident of this nature in the U.S. by a Black individual would not receive such a lenient punishment.
Campbell recently did a shoot at the French label's studio in Paris for their upcoming 2008 autumn/winter campaign. This is truly a mess because it goes to show that the way models carry themselves does not have a repercussion on their careers. Kate Moss was snorting cocaine before YSL hired her so Campbell's ascension as the new face is no surprise given her recent exploits.

Haute Flash: Designer Yves Saint Laurent Dies

PARIS (AFP) — French fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent, widely hailed as one of the greatest designers of the 20th century, died Sunday in Paris. He was 71.
"Yves Saint Laurent died Sunday at 11:10 pm," announced his foundation, the Pierre-Berge-Saint Laurent Foundation.
The reclusive French maestro, who had retired from haute couture in 2002 after four decades at the top of his trade, had been ill for some time.
During his farewell appearance seven years ago, Saint Laurent had told reporters he had "always given the highest importance of all to respect for this craft, which is not exactly an art, but which needs an artist to exist."
More about the life of this fashion icon after the jump
One of a handful of designers who dominated 20th century fashion -- on a par with Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and Paul Poiret -- Yves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint Laurent was born in the coastal town of Oran, Algeria, on August 1, 1936, at a time when the North African country was still considered part of France.
A shy, lonely, child, he became fascinated by clothes, and already had a solid portfolio of sketches when he first arrived in Paris in 1953, aged 17.
Vogue editor Michel de Brunoff, who was to become a key supporter, was quickly won over, and published them.
The following year Saint Laurent won three of the four categories in a design competition in Paris -- the fourth went to his contemporary Karl Lagerfeld, now at Chanel.
Discerning the young man's potential, de Brunoff advised Christian Dior to hire him and he rapidly emerged as heir apparent to the great couturier, taking over the house when Dior died suddenly three years later.
Saint Laurent would say of his mentor: "Dior fascinated me. I couldn't speak in front of him. He taught me the basis of my art. Whatever was to happen next, I never forgot the years spent at his side."
However in 1960, like many Frenchmen of his age, Saint Laurent was called up to fight in his native Algeria, where an independence war was under way.
Less than three weeks later he won an exemption on health grounds, but when he returned to Paris it was to learn that Dior had already found a replacement for him, in the person of Marc Bohan.
With his close associate and lover Pierre Berge, Saint Laurent resolved to strike out on his own, with Berge taking care of the business side.
Saint Laurent's success lay in the harmony he achieved between body and garment -- what he called "the total silence of clothing."
He was also in the right place at the right time. Having learned his trade at the house of Dior, he founded his own couture house at the start of the 1960s, at a time when the world was changing and there was a new appetite for originality.
Saint Laurent rode his luck through the rise of the youth market and pop culture fuelled by the economic boom of the 1960s, when women suddenly had more economic freedom.
His name and the familiar YSL logo became synonymous with all the latest trends, highlighted by the creation of the Rive Gauche ready-to-wear label and perfume, as well as astute licensing deals for accessories and perfumes.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, he set the pace for fashion around the world, opening up the Japanese market and subsequently expanding to South Korea and Taiwan.
Among his many fans in his native France was the actress Catherine Deneuve, who was always to be seen at his shows.
Berge, speaking Sunday on France's LCI television, called Saint Laurent a fashion revolutionary.
"He knew perfectly well that he had revolutionised haute couture, the important place he occupied in the second half of the 20th century," he said.
But Saint Laurent's career was not without controversy. In 1971 a collection modelled on the styles of World War II Paris was slammed by some American critics, and his launch in the mid 1970s of a perfume called "Opium" brought accusations that he was condoning drug use.
For fellow-designer Christian Lacroix, the reason for Saint Laurent's success was his astonishing versatility. There had, Lacroix said, been other great designers but none with the same range.
"Chanel, Schiaparelli, Balenciaga and Dior all did extraordinary things. But they worked within a particular style," he explained. "Yves Saint Laurent is much more versatile, like a combination of all of them. I sometimes think he's got the form of Chanel with the opulence of Dior and the wit of Schiaparelli."
In his later years the depression that had haunted him all his life became more oppressive, and at his farewell bash in 2002 Saint Laurent admitted to having recourse to "those false friends which are tranquillisers and narcotics."
