50 Cent's House Catches On Fire

A multimillion-dollar Long Island home at the center of a dispute between Grammy-nominated rapper 50 Cent and his former girlfriend was destroyed by a suspicious fire early Friday. The blaze occurred just days after a heated confrontation inside the woman's attorney's office over the home. 50 Cent does not live in the home and apparently wasn't there at the time.
The rapper's ex-girlfriend, Shaniqua Tompkins, and two of her children, including 50 Cent's son, were among the injured. The other three adults in the home were not immediately identified. Earlier this year, Tompkins filed suit against 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, claiming he had promised her the $2.4 million house more than a decade ago but that since their breakup he now wants to evict her and their 10-year-old son.

Haute Flash: Nixon Drops Summer Collection '08

Classic Rotolog style watch

Corporate-inspired wristwatch
For a man, a wristwatch is a fashion essential to consummate any look you're going for. Be it a prep, corporate, or urban-inspired look, a wristwatch adds that level of functional sophistication that rounds it all off. Courtesy of California watch brand, Nixon and their new 2008 summer collection, possessing a watch of that caliber is all the more possible.
For their 2008 summer collection, Nixon kept the classic design of the Rotolog watch, but splashed on some warm colors to bring out that summer feel. The diversity of the collection is highlighted by the contemporary styled silver wristwatches that can work well in a corporate scene. Furthermore, the slender nature of Nixon's summer timepieces is perfect for pairing it with a weather-friendly short-sleeve shirt or a long-sleeve shirt for say the office environment. The face of these Nixon watches are not too bulky or large to pose aesthetic problems with the cuff of a dress shirt or when worn with a suit.
The rest of the collection can be viewed below.

T.I. To Get MTV Reality Series... Why?

I'd rather watch Fantasia try to read a book than turn on this bullsh*t:
[MTV] will follow the hip-hop star as he performs more than 1,000 of community service before beginning to serve his one-year prison sentence next spring. Ish Entertainment is behind the untitled series, which has scored an eight-episode order from MTV.
Cameras already chronicled T.I.'s release from house arrest, and shooting will start in earnest this summer, leading up to his return to jail in early 2009. MTV plans to air the show some time soon after that.

IT'S ALMOST TIME!!!!!!!! SATC PICS -yay!

New York’s favorite girls brought sexy back to the Big Apple at the premiere of their long-awaited film, Sex and the City: The Movie at Radio City Music Hall. Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis hit the bright pink carpet, studded with Swarovski crystals, to kick off the film’s opening on Friday May 30.
"The sexiest part about tonight is being here with all these people," said Parker, who along with her costars, glittered in a metallic gown.

Haute or Not: Viktor and Rolf Video
Hmmm...now this one is a bit strange. Viktor and Rolf released this video to create a buzz for their fall/winter 2008-2009 collection; their soundtrack intoned it and now there's only one word on their models' lips: "NO". But the question remains: what exactly are they saying "No" to? In this contribution to Political Fashion, the really interesting thing is what we don't find out...I'm going to give this a Not but maybe I'm just not deep enough to get it. Though it is pretty interesting.

Haute Flash: LL Cool J for Sears

Edward Lampert is determined to prove to Wall Street he's a retailer after all.
The Sears Holdings Corp. chairman and his team are making some long-awaited merchandising moves in the hedge fund billionaire's retail empire in an attempt to reenergize Sears' apparel offering, stimulate traffic and generate some buzz. And key among them is taking the well-trodden path of launching a celebrity label, albeit with an unexpected partner: rapper LL Cool J.
Sears has teamed up with the hip-hop veteran to launch a brand called LL Cool J for Sears. The collection of casualwear for juniors, young men's, girls' and boys' will roll out to 450 of Sears' 900 stores in September and could generate as much as $100 million to $150 million in its first year, sources said.
-excerpt wwd
Sears' Hip-Hop Hope: Store Signs LL Cool J To Do Apparel Brand
By Julee Kaplan
More info after the jump!
If it succeeds, the brand could go a long way toward easing some of the growing skepticism over Lampert's strategy for Sears Holdings, which combines Sears and Kmart, and whether the conglomerate is more of a financial play than a retail one. If all goes as planned, the LL Cool J brand would be a boost for the store's "softer side," said Irv Neger, Sears' senior vice president of apparel, serving an urban consumer the retailer hasn't been addressing. "We know this [urban] customer is in the store, but it's a customer we weren't reaching. With this brand, we see tremendous growth opportunity."
As for what LL Cool J knows about women's apparel, the hip-hop artist insists he's had plenty of experience.
"I was raised by a matriarch, I have a wife and three daughters, so I know what women are looking for when they shop for clothes," he said. "My main concern with juniors is to make sure the fit is right. The fabrics have to feel nice on a woman's body, but sizing and fit are very important. I know that if she comes in, puts it on and it doesn't fit, she won't come back. Clothes have to make a woman feel good, relaxed and sexy. We are going to be constantly looking at fine-tuning the fit and we'll get it right."
But Sears is going against the grain by tapping the 40-year-old rapper. Retailers seem to be launching celebrity lines as quickly as they're marking down in these tough economic circumstances, but most lately have been signing younger, fresher faces — Avril Lavigne will soon launch at Kohl's and Rachel Bilson is doing a line for DKNY Jeans.
Sears executives are hoping LL Cool J's longevity in the business will be a plus rather than a negative in these flash-in-the-pan times.
The store is building shops-in-shops for the brand in each department. In the juniors area, the LL Cool J brand will sit near the current mix of sportswear from Southpole, Levi's, Personal Identity and Joe Boxer.
"The shop-in-shops in each category will help to show customers our new point of view," Neger said.
The collection will retail on the higher end of its mix in juniors — from $22 for a graphic T-shirt to $50 for a pair of jeans.
Evidence of LL Cool J's involvement is evident throughout — from an embroidered tattoo on the back of a jacket to song lyrics printed on a T-shirt. By holiday, the collection will grow in number of stockkeeping units, extend into 600 doors and launch accessories, Neger said. With LL Cool J's wide appeal, Neger said he can envision the brand extending into new categories ranging from bedding to fitness equipment.
The entertainer, whose given name is James Todd Smith, has been building his music career since 1984, when Def Jam Recordings co-founders Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin signed him as a flagship artist for their label. He was just 16 years old. Since then, the Queens, N.Y., native has released 12 albums; 10 of them reached multiplatinum status and the last two reached gold. His 13th record, titled "Exit 13," will hit stores in July.
And, like many of his peers, LL Cool J has broadened his scope beyond hip-hop. He's appeared in several movies, including the upcoming "The Deal" with Meg Ryan and William H. Macy, and has been featured on Fox's "House" and NBC's "30 Rock."
The entertainer also has written a children's book, "And the Winner Is"; a workout book, "LL Cool J's Platinum Workout," and an autobiography, "I Make My Own Rules." His men's apparel brand, Todd Smith, sells at Macy's and specialty stores, competing with Sean John.
"I have always had a hand in fashion in some capacity [as the face of brands such as Kangol and Fubu], but I have never embraced a brand the way I will embrace this," LL Cool J said. "The LL Cool J name is a brand I have been building for 25 years and I didn't want to do this line with just any store. I wanted to wait until I felt comfortable enough to take the leap."
Neger said that even before he met with LL Cool J, he was working with Regatta, the Li & Fung-owned production house, to bring more fashion into Sears, which is based in Hoffman Estates, Ill. Regatta executives eventually signed LL Cool J, and is handling the production of LL Cool J for Sears apparel.
With Regatta's capabilities, Neger said there should be no problem shipping new product monthly. Regatta has become known as a force in the industry, producing a series of retail-exclusive brands including Simply Vera Vera Wang and Daisy Fuentes for Kohl's and Metro 7 for Wal-Mart.
Evoking his youth in Queens, where he shopped in Sears with his grandfather, LL Cool J said he wanted to launch the line in a store with which he had an emotional connection. He said he also wanted his brand to appeal to a wide audience of working families.
"We used to run up and down the aisles, we would play games in the store," he said. "I used to beg my grandfather to take me to Sears and then to get some fast food after. I have the fondest memories of the store, so this partnership just felt right."
Neger said he sees the partnership as long-term, with the brand becoming a core part of the overall structure at Sears. The line is part of Sears' overall turnaround strategy to fill a void in the store and address more of what shoppers are looking for, Neger said. The retailer has adopted a specialty store mentality.
"Tough economic times create evolution and we are going to take the steps to develop and make us right for our customers," Neger said.
"We are going to take a lot more risks in juniors," he said. "It's all about style, quality and value in juniors and we plan to move quickly, reacting to the trends and constantly have new merchandise on the floor."
Neger said there will be a major marketing push behind the LL Cool J brand as well, both in print and TV.
The ads will feature LL Cool J himself, along with his family — his wife, Simone, son Najee and daughters Italia, Samaria and Nina. The idea, the rapper said, is to bring the brand to the whole family by showcasing his own family in the campaign. In addition, LL Cool J said he will be working on more ways to give customers access to him, by holding in-store contests where a shopper can win a chance to hang with him in the studio or on the set of a video.
"It's all about making the great life attainable," LL Cool J said.

Haute Mess: Jellie Gladiators

Warranted that gladiator sandals are all the rave this summer, but they didn't need to go to these lengths. Jellie gladiators?!?! A pang of uneasiness seriously enters my tummy as I envision hoards of people prancing about with these new jellie gladiator sandals thinking their chic. Jellies evoke fond memories of when we were eight years old by the seashore or at the odd kiddies pool party and I think those childhood moments need not find its way over to elements of adult fashion. I think I like gladiator sandals just as is--leathery and all!

Colgate MaxFresh Video Music Competition Finalist Selected

*Check back with us later today for an exclusive one-on-one interview with Bryan-Michael Cox!
Last month we let you know about the Colgate MaxFresh Video Competition where you got the chance to record a demo with five time grammy winning super producer Bryan-Michael Cox. After more than 300 MySpace users submitted their music videos and more than 70,000 votes five semi-finalists have been selected.
A panel of three celebrity judges – Bryan Michael Cox (producer for artists such as Mariah Carey and Usher), Danyel Smith (editor-in-chief of Vibe magazine) and Tito El Bambino (Latin singing superstar) - are now looking for music fans to help them determine the winner.

MySpace users can provide their opinions on the five semi-finalists by logging onto www.myspace.com/colgatemaxfresh which will contribute to the judge's final decision.
Check out the five finalists and and more info about the competition under the cut:
The Finalists:

Click the name to see their music video and vote for your favorite.
Broderick Young, age 20, St. Louis, MO
Jen Senese, age 23, Chandler, AZ
Kareema Reid, age 28, Lansdale, PA
Erika David, age 19, Las Vegas, NV
Matthew Gallina, age 28, Springfield, IL
The Competition
Artists hoping to become a household name no longer have to wait on long audition lines or move to Hollywood in search of an agent to get their shot at stardom. Unsigned talent can take their voices to the web by competing in a new online talent search hosted by Colgate-Palmolive, the makers of Colgate® Max Fresh® toothpaste, and MySpace TV.
The winner of this year’s Max Fresh® Video Music Competition will participate in a professional recording session and video production, featuring an original song written and produced by Bryan-Michael Cox, and the opportunity to perform their original song at the All-Access Lounge - the pre-party to Z100 FM’s Jingle Ball, one of New York City’s most popular concert events.
Commenting on his role as a judge and the opportunity to work with undiscovered talent, Bryan-Michael Cox said: “Standing out in the industry is an incredibly difficult task. I decided to partner with Colgate® Max Fresh® because the contest gives us a way to find fresh new talent from across the country and the online entry makes it easy for the contestants to share an audition video with a wide audience. It’s the first time I’ve ever written a song without knowing who will end up singing it. That creates an element of excitement for me in addition to finding a fresh voice.”
Spencer Pingel, General Manager of Oral Care at Colgate-Palmolive, added: “The Colgate® Max Fresh® brand is proud to partner with MySpaceTV to hold this online talent search. The Max Fresh® Video Music Competition will create an interactive, online forum of musical talent, allow our aspiring contestants to share their audition video with a wide, receptive audience, and best of all, grant our winner an opportunity of a lifetime.”

New Usher Video "Moving Moutains"
Here is Usher's third single and video for "Moving Mountains". The video picks up where "Love In This Club" left off. The video is really cool, but I'm not sure how I feel about this song. Anyways, Usher's fifth studio album, "Here I Stand", hits stores next week on the May 27th. I'm not that excited, hopefully, there is some better material on the album because I really loved the "Confessions" album.
Moment of Lenzism
I'm sure you've all heard the story of Soldier Girl. That bi-polar chick who was WILDIN' in the subway. A few weeks after the video debuted on the internet she's since been arrested and became an internet phenomenon. The price of fame...
Anyway, someone reposted the video with subtitles of what it sounds like she is sayin' and it is HILARIOUS!

Haute Flash: Birth Control Never Looked Better...

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturers of Yaz, a birth control pill, are looking to fashion to reinvent the perception of birth control. Bayer have teamed up with Project Runway judge and ex-fashion director at Elle Magazine, Nina Garcia, and Step Up Women's Network to launch the Yaz: Step Up and Go Beyond Contest, a design challenge to reinvigorate the iconic birth control case into a more sophisticated purse for women. The chosen design will replace the humdrum case that Yaz pills are currently carried in plus the winning contestant stands to received $10,000 towards investing in their career as a designer. Hmmm...parading birth control pills about is soon to become a chic look!
Earlier in the month McDonald's went for a revamp through fashionable uniforms now birth control pills? I'm not sure what to make of this, but I guess now women will feel a lot more comfortable toting around their fashion-forward Yaz birth control carrying purse!
Design submissions end June 30, 2008 and you can click here to enter. Winners will be announced at the New York Fashion Week for fall 2008.

Street Style: Introducing Summer Trends -- A Staple Sandal

Spotted: Blackburn Cafe, Howard University
I love the detailing on Ashley's sandals that gives it that safari chic look thats going to be big this summer. Also, going for a sandal that has an ankle strap of some sort will only flatter, accentuate, and draw admirers to the physique of your ankle/lower leg. The Etro sandals really capture the gladiator sandal trend with the volume of straps it has. Ms. Ashley's, on the other hand, is a more delicate rendition of the gladiator sandal with its single strap. In appreciating the entire sandal complete with its creative ankle straps, it is only natural for the movement of the eyes to welcome the beauty of the lower leg (and hopefully your entire outfit if your as stylish as Ms. Ashley here)! So do away with those flip flops and put your best foot forward people and you can't go wrong this summer!

HAUTE MESS: Disney Couture Pirate's Noose Necklace

Okay, so this necklace is wrong for sooo many reasons! (click above to view) After all the incidents with nooses this past year in Jena, University of Maryland, and Golfweek cover- this is just inappropriate even if it's a pirate's noose and not that of a black man! At no point or time will nooses ever be en vogue- it's just too touchy to even go there! They also knew that this would be a touchy item so they chose to have an Asian chick model it! Ugh, I really don't know what Disney was thinking by letting this get past the drawing board. It's just racially insensitive and a haute mess!

Haute Flash: Rihanna and Victoria's Secret????

Rihanna may be on the verge of becoming a Victoria's Secret model - or at least that's what Rihanna's people are telling us. It all started last week when Rihanna half jokingly told a UK magazine that may be interested in creating her very own line of lingerie.
That's when, according to one of Rihanna's peeps, Victoria's Secret came calling. The insider explained to MediaTakeOut.com, "No one even contacted [Victoria's Secret], they contacted us ... and they were throwing around all kinds of numbers and ideas. Everyone's excited, especially Rihanna."
This chick is really on a roll! First her line of 'brellas' for Totes and now this? Wow- that's haute girl! I just hope it's not all patent leather...

Kanye Tops MTV's Hottest MC's In The Game List

MTV has released their now controversial Hottest MC In The Game List and this years number one spot actually does not surprise me at all. And I'm sure not the rapper either...
In summer 2007, the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust sat down and had another controversial roundtable debate. Unlike previous discussions, the trustees devised a list of not the greatest ever, but the Hottest MCs in the Game right then. The rankings were based on lyrics, flow, impact on the game, success and swagger. The roundtable recently reconvened and came up with a brand-new list of Hottest MCs. Our experts used the same criteria, but only judged on the past year of hip-hop.

Why He's Hot
With all due respect to the Diddys and Busta Rhymeses of the world, Kanye West has surpassed everyone as the best live performer in hip-hop. Grooming himself on stadium tours with Jay-Z, U2 and the Rolling Stones over the years has done him good. Even if West didn't release another rap this year, he'd still be the hottest for his Glow in the Dark Tour alone. Without exaggeration, it's the greatest one-man show put on by a hip-hop artist, possibly ever. Pure expression, no irony, just an irrefutable avowal that he is the game's most imaginative visionary right now. 'Ye's sold-out set is an orgy of lights, classic songs and conceptual genius. You've never seen anything like it.
Check out the rest of the list at MTV.

Jennifer Hudson will release her debut, self-titled album via J Records in September. The first single, "Spotlight", leaked online a few days ago and is expected to impact radio on June 9th. The song is okay, and is clearly written and produced by Ne-yo and Stargate. My problem with the song is it's very "adult contemporary" and Hudson is still young. I have faith that Hudson's voice will shine through on this project. In addition to her new album, Hudson is featured in two films this year "Sex and the City" (May 27th) and "The Secret Life of Bees" (Oct. 17th). So, definitely go out and support her music and movies.

Papoose Facing Legal Issues Too
On the heels of Remy Ma's eight year sentencing, Papoose is also facing legal troubles of his own for a video he recently shot for the diss record "Ambulance". Bed-Stuy Volunteer Ambulance Corps (BSVAC) are planning to sue Papoose for misleading them into believing the video was to showcase the positives of what the ambulance services does for the community.
The video he shot for "Ambulance," his diss record to Brooklyn, New York rapper Uncle Murda, features a BSVAC ambulance and several EMT workers from the branch. However, with lyrics such as "I put your ass in the back of that ambulance truck," Rocky Robinson, co-founder of the BSVAC knew the video was in no way related to the lives saved by the BSVAC.
Robinson had this to say to the New York Daily News:
“His people told us the video would be about the neighborhood and how we respond to save lives. We don't want to be a part of something where somebody gets hurt. Our image is everything to us.”
Hopefully Papoose digs himself out of this rot. This couple just can't seem to stay out of legal trouble!

T-Pain Nominated For 5 BET Awards

I've said it once and i'll say it again: Hip Hop Is Dead. Then again, its just the BET Awards.
T-Pain's status as urban music's most frequent collaborator helped him nab a leading five BET Award nominations.
Kanye West and Keyshia Cole received three nominations, while Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and newcomer Flo Rida received a pair each. The awards were to be announced later Thursday.
While T-Pain has his own hits, including the chart-topper "Buy U a Drank," the singer and his electronically manipulated voice are often found on other people's songs. He received nominations for best collaboration for his work with Chris Brown ("Kiss Kiss"), West ("Good Life") and Flo Rida ("Low"), while he was also nominated twice in the video of the year category.
"T-Pain is everywhere," BET Executive Vice President Stephen Hill told The Associated Press. "He's got five nominations, none of them for his own work."[via: Yahoo News]

Street Style: Crossover Culture in Fashion

The colors of the shirt, tie and vest come together beautifully. But I'm also loving his little skull and bones trinket on his wallet chain. As we can see here, the skull and bones symbol is not reserved for the dark, hard-edged, rocker image, but can blended into a colorful, light-hearted aesthetic.
Stefano Tonchi (pictured below), New York Times Magazine's style editor, steps out in a daring manner in terms of tie selection. Infusing the "skull and bones" fashion insignia on a tie and pairing it with a very polished suit complete with pocket square shows that the "skull and bones" is hitting high-end fashion circles in a suave way! Jim Jones, Shop Boyz and others alike who put this skull and bones look on the map are really starting a crossover culture don't you think? Party and work like a rock-star indeed!

Playing In The Snow

I would like to introduce a new segment which we will be calling Playing in the Snow. To give you guys an even better experience we'll be taking a break from urban pop culture from time to time to let you know what's going on in the other side of the entertainment. Hence, playing in the snow. Get it? 'Cause snow is white! And so are white people! Trust me, being this clever ISN'T as easy as it looks...
A fan of The Hills? Personally, I don't get it. But hey, I'm not 14. Check out a clip from the season finale party for their "reality" tv show.
Here's a clip of Mariah pluging her perfume in a Macy's commercial. If you look closely you can see Nick Cannon holding her purse in the corner. That's love.
Kim Cattral heads to Showbiz Tonight to talk sex and Sex and the City. Unfortunately that's the only old white lady you'll hear talking about sex on prime time TV for awhile. Vintage sex talk host Sue Johanson is stepping down from her highly rated show on Oxygen.
We plan on doing these kinds of posts a couple times a week. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Haute Flash: Gap Launches Limited Edition Artist T's

Gap will be unveiling a limited edition artist t-shirt collection set to launch in select stores and online tomorrow, May 15th! To celebrate the 2008 Whitney Biennial, Gap has joined forces with top contemporary artists in producing limited edition artist tees. Some artists include Chuck Close, Jeff Koons, Marilyn Minter, and Kiki Smith with t-shirt designs ranging from political messages to colorful abstract confections. The classically Gap ad campaign was shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. This is a haute move because while the Red campaign does goes to charity - I was getting tired of seeing it honestly. Let's see how quickly these get played out...

Haute or Not: Nike and Opening Ceremony Kicks

Well, they say April showers bring May flowers...here they go [I guess?]. These are the brainchild of Opening Ceremony and megabrand, Nike. A ton of celebs including Mischa Barton and Chloe Sevigny are can't wait to get their hands on these limited edition sneaks. These cold work with the right outfit, so I'm going to give it a haute but what do you think? Are you feeling the floral or is the print just to much for your buds to handle?

Street Style: Great Summer Party Looks

Ladies, we all know that parties are abundant during the summer months but many have the issue of worry about the isssue of being too casual. Danielle hit the nail on the head with this one! To ensure that you're just dressy enough, use texture as your marker! This ruffled frock might have been too casual in a jersey knit, but since Danielle's dress was a silk satin it popped! Summer is also a great time for bright and fun and accessories so don't be afraid of the rainbow people. Just be sure it all has some unifying element to it:) Haute stuff, Ms. Danielle- you are definitely styling in these streets.

New Music Tuesday

This is Cherish's sophomore album and the music is definitely superior to some other R&B acts out right now. Definitely listen to "Before You Were My Man", "Amnesia", "I Ain't Even Trippin" and "Killa". Although their promotion has been a little weak, I think this album will pick up steam as more material is released for now you can visit their myspace page here.

Quick Quotes: Rihanna Is A Bad Girl

Wow. I guess... Rihanna... Is a real person?
"I love what I do but, yes, this stuff does start to take its toll on you. Sometimes you get really miserable and on the edge, but people don't know why you're acting like that.
"You always want to be kind to people, so you're forced to be a bubbly person, but, to be honest, sometimes I'd just like to sit in a corner by myself and be quiet."

New Cherish Video "Amnesia"
This is Cherish's new video for their second single, "Amnesia", from their May 13th release, The Truth. Radio hasn't really taken to their new material (Killa), but past releases such as "Do it, to it" were highly successful. I like this video (reminds me of N'SYNC's "Gone" video with the black and white treatment) and the songs even sound similar. Anyways, I hope they do well this time around they are extremely talented sisters, but labels don't give you too many chances these days. Go out and pick up the album on Tuesday!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Lil' B. Sure!

Interview By. Jamilah Lemieux
Albert J. Brown IV is on a mission to prove to the world that while he may share a name and a career with his famous father, he has the talent to blaze his own trails in the music industry. Twenty-one year old Lil B. Sure! (please say the !) was born right as dad Al B. Sure!'s sexy falsetto catapulted him to global superstar status. The younger B. Sure! was born and raised in "Money Earnin' " Mount Vernon NY (hometown to the legendary Pete Rock, Heavy D and the elder B. Sure!) where he first displayed his musical gifts as a small child. As a young adult, he is now ready to share his talents with the world.
MTV's "Rock The Cradle" gave Lil' B Sure! an opportunity to introduce himself to a national audience and while he didn't win the competition, he is looking towards the future and reaching for bigger, better things. He is currently in the studio working on his debut album and he will join his proud papa, along with Landon and Bobby Brown for a father/son tour in the near future. A grounded young man with raw talent and charm to spare (he sang for me over the phone and I melted a little bit), Lil' B. will be keeping the Sure! legacy going for years to come.
Read the full interview with more photos and video below:

Lil’ B. Sure! is just an artist who likes to have fun, who likes to please the crowd. I love to make people happy and hear them screaming. But at the same time, when people go home and say “He’s not just an artist, he’s a good person. He’s not Hollywood…” You know, to be able to talk to people after the show. For people to see that I am smiling all the time just like my dad. You know, I’m still a regular person, a regular kid who likes to play basketball and go to the mall. It’s hard now, cause of all the girls, like when I go to the mall and stuff. (And I) like to have a social life. I like hanging out and going to the clubs….
Q: You’re 21, right? Did you just start clubbing and partying or were you doing it for a while?
I’m about to be 22, October 30th. Scorpio, baby! I didn’t always like to party. You know, I like to chill. The party scene is cool too, you know? But I rather be at home with my friends. I’m always trying to go to the studio and do a couple tracks. It brings me back to my childhood. Like, when I was a kid I’d be wondering “Why am in the studio?” It’s like five in the morning and I’m little and sleep in the studio. Now I understand why my dad had me there and why he worked as hard as he did. Now I’m in the studio myself and the sun is coming up and we putting down song at six, seven in the morning and listening to it on the way home. I get it now, I see what that’s all about.
Q: What’s this about you sleeping until 4 o’clock each day?
(Laughs) It was a joke that my dad had said (on “Rock The Cradle”), that I sleep till four. That’s not true. (But) if I am in the studio ‘till 6 or 7 (in the morning), then I think I have the right to sleep until noon! That’s what my dad does, he never gets a break. My dad was never home when I was younger. He was always working. And I wanted to have a regular conversation with him, spend time with him. But he was always working and when he came home, he had to sleep! And when he wakes up it was like “I gotta run”. Its crazy cause its hitting me now. I’m in the same shoes he was in and a lot of people, like my friends and girls are saying the same things: “We never hang out no more!” But it really is like this. I’m just a person who likes to get some sleep. Who doesn’t like to sleep? (Laughs)
Q: How old were you when you started recording?
Eighteen (when) I officially got in the studio and made a couple tracks. My dad called my uncles Pete Rock and Eric B, you know, Eddie F. and Heavy D, everybody out of Mount Vernon. I got a lot of people who are like my uncles, like K-Ci and Jojo. I’ve been recording since I was 18 and I think I have really grown a lot since then. I just spoke to my uncle Terrance Deadly, who’s done tracks for 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige, etc. And he said I’ve really grown since coming out of New York. You know, I’m from New York. And he said “You really grew without (relying) on your dad’s help. This is a stepping stone.” The MTV show, even though it came out not too good, it really got people’s attention. I’m not gonna make excuses, I want people to hear my stuff and I want people to hear how I sing my way. So, when I get the opportunity I want to come out and really work with people.
I’m from Mount Vernon and the mayor actually called me last night like “Hold your head up. This is MTV, it’s not really an urban type of thing. But it was a good opportunity.” I got to meet a lot of people. I caught up with MC Hammer, I got to talk to him for a few hours. I met Dee Synder from Twisted Sister. Last night, he came up to me and he said (that) he was so mad that I didn’t get to perform my song I was supposed to do. It’s called “We Should Be” and it’s by Trey Songz. You know, I can really hit that song. And (Synder) was telling me “You guys have it harder than American Idol!” And it’s true, ‘cause the bar is set higher. With American Idol it’s like, okay, they’re regular people. Maybe they can sing, maybe not. But with us being celebrity kids, it’s different. It’s like “Oh, he don’t look exactly like his father. Oh, MC Hammer’s daughter, she don’t fit this particular mold. Landon (Brown), he’s not crazy like Bobby Brown was…..”
Q: Speaking of Landon Brown, how did you guys meet? Cause you knew him before the show.
Oh yeah, I been performing with Landon for about a year, way before the show. I was at a concert in 2006, my dad’s concert for the Hurricane Katrina victims. I was chilling in VIP and I see a big entourage coming, with a bunch of kids And it was Bobby Brown, who I met once before, back in the day. But I didn’t know him like that, you know? And….Landon walked up to me, and we had heard about one another like “Oh, that’s Al. B. Sure!’s son, he sings” and “You know Bobby Brown’s son Landon sings”. So he walked straight up to me and asked me if I wanted to battle! And I laughed and we started singing and from that point on, we were cool and he was like my brother. We been through the whole thing with the famous dads, and that’s a blessing to be like “Oh, you went through that too?” you know? We finish each others sentences and we both have hot tempers. I kinda learned to channel mine, ‘cause I’m trying to be a business man now, you know? (Laughs). We are best friends, definitely. When I got kicked off (the show), the first thing he said was “I got you. I’m a look out for you”…..We got each others backs, definitely.
Q: On "Rock The Cradle” you got to perform your dad’s classic song “Nite And Day”. What was that like for you?
A lot of people didn’t like it because they were used to hearing it in a different key. And I coulda sang it in falsetto, but then it would have been just like when may dad did it. I didn’t want to sing “Nite And Day”, I wanted to sing “Secret Garden”, you know I coulda killed that. (Sings) “ I wanna read your mind….” I wanted to sing a song that is gonna show my vocal ability. (“Nite And Day”) was not a vocal song. I was really mad that I didn’t get to sing “____”, because I really wanted to let people know what I can do vocally. But I will definitely have a few other things coming, so be ready!
Q: Aside from the Trey Songz joint, what is your favorite song to perform?
A song I have called “Scorpio Love” and all the girls love it…..It’s on my Myspace. I got a lot of emails like “Please perform it”. I got emails from around the world about that song, girls go crazy for that and a song called “Radio”. I took “Radio” off my page, ‘cause I had some issues with the producers. They saw me on TV and decided they wanted to charge more money for the song, you know how that goes. “Scorpio Love” is about me and another Scorpio. I wrote the song like (sings) “I want the Scorpio, I need the Scorpio love/ Forget the bed, let’s start straight on the floor…..I want to pull your hair…” The song is so sexy; it’s just a hot song. The girls love it. And then I get messages like “Why you can’t make a song about Geminis?” (laughs) I’m actually thinking about doing a mixtape with a song about all of the (astrological) signs, for the girls.
Q: Speaking of, how are the girls treating you?
(Laughs)It’s wild! My Myspace, I try not to check it anymore. It’s like 20 pages of messages and pages and pages of friend requests. I go to the mall and to Roscoes, and I hear all the girls whispering. And I’ll be with Landon and they like “Oh, that’s Al. B Sure!’s son and Bobby Brown’s son! They sing….”, and all of that. Once in a while they will say something like “Oh, you did a good job on the show last week”. Actually, I was just in Vegas and these older women came up to me. They were like, my dad’s age. Older even. And they came up to me like “Are you Al B. Sure!’s son? We want to take pictures with you!” And I was like “Naw, I’m not. But is he here? I want to meet him myself!” It was pretty funny.
The girls, they do treat me well. But music, that’s my girl. That’s my wife. (Laughs)
Q: So how would you describe your style? What is the Lil B. Sure! sound?
I’m just me, you know? I’m like the new version of me, just doing my thing. In some ways, it’s kinda like the Jodeci feel. It’s not quite hardcore gangsta, (but) I’m from the hood, you know? People see that I’m Al B. Sure!’s son, but I grew up with my mom in the hood part of Mount Vernon. And I’ve seen a lot of things. I got uncles who are in gangs. I don’t live that life, but I’ve seen it. So when I write music, I can go anywhere with it. You know, the love making and all that and then I can do a hook for a rap song. Like something for Dipset. That why I look up to Trey (Songz). I look up to Lloyd, cause they doing they thing.
Q: You’re living in California now doing music? Are you living with your dad?
I’m living in Cali now, like in the Valley area. LA, basically. I live with my dad, but I am kinda like a nomad. I’m never in the house, I’m always doing something. Gotta be out doing something, so sometimes I’m staying with my manager or I’m staying with Landon. I’m getting ready to get an apartment of my own, but I’m trying to stack my money up first!
Q: What are your goals for your career? What do you see yourself doing long-term? Do you want to produce for other people? Write?
I want to do it all. The one thing I wish my dad had done, I wish he had done more back in the day. He was just singing and producing. I wish he had done movies and acting and surrounded his self around a lot of things. He’s starting to do more things now like that now, you know, but I wish he had done more stuff earlier on. For myself, I want to do videos, movies, direct… I want to do EVERYTHING! I don’t wanna just sing, but I want to get a Grammy. That is one of my biggest goals as an artist; I want to a win a Grammy. I want to write for other people too.
Q: If you could write for any other artist, who would it be?
Probably J Holiday. That’s my boy! He’s really doing his thing, and I have a lot of respect for him. Not too long ago, I was in Arizona with him, H-Town, Babyface, Trey Songz, Tyrese. It was just wild.
Q: What words do you want to leave us with? Your fans, people who just heard of you, people who may have seen you on the show, what do you want to say to everyone?
This is just the beginning, this is JUST the beginning. Don’t mind MTV, don’t focus on that. I got a lot of homework to do. I am still learning the game. Right now, this is just me being me. So look out for Lil B Sure!. After this show, from this point on, everything I do is what I wanna do. This is gonna be all me. I don’t have any excuses. I just have me. So just look out!

Street Style: Introducing Summer Trends -- Nautical Fashion

Nautical fashion is a timeless trend that seems to return season after season. The flexibility of the look allows it to be reworked year in year out and still maintain a fresh appeal. As you can see, the nautical trend is heavy with navy and white colors often presented in a classic striped pattern.
Interestingly, Men.Style.com just issued their Spring 2008 trend reports and this emerging Blue Planet trend had a very nautical slant in terms of the colors and styling elements.
The young chaps outfit (pictured above) definitely exudes an aquatic-theme (à la boat shoes) that makes me literally want to go deep-sea diving or hop aboard a cruise filled with stylish denizens the world over. The customary white stripes on the navy blazer is an ode to the nautical look and pairing it with cleanly tailored trousers gives it a polished yet casual appearance.

As for the lady, the nautical feel of the cardigan thrown over a floral top is a nice play on some spring/summer trends. She told me the playfulness of the scarf topped off the sailor effect she was going for!

Jennifer Hudson Finally Has A Release Date

(On The Sex of Sex and the City)
Honestly I forgot that J. Hud was even dropping an album. It looks as though her album has a September release date after the Sex and the City movie comes out.
Jennifer Hudson has recruited India.Arie and Alicia Keys as mentors as she plans to embark on a pop career. The Oscar winner and former American Idol favorite hopes to release her first album after her new film Sex & The City hits cinemas next month (Jun08) and she has turned to two peers for advice. “I didn’t realize the process would be so long. I’m discovering it as I go along. “Alicia Keys was one of the people who talked to me about it. I wanted to make sure it was OK because it’s taking so long. “She told me it took her at least a year to record her album and that’s the process, so don’t worry about it.” And she turned to Arie when she needed a big hit on the album: “Greatest Creation, which Indie.Arie wrote, is where I see myself and where I’d like to see myself, in saying that my greatest creation is me.” Hudson will release the album in September (08), admitting “I haven’t named it yet.”

ART ATTACK: Stilt Walker Collection: Generation I
Jacob's has chosen to evoke his African roots through his portrayal of masquerades and stilt walkers in his recent work. Hailing from Trinidad and Tobago, Jacobs depicted his lived experiences of Moko Jumbies, the name given to stilt walkers in Trinidad and Tobago. The Moko Jumbies share a rich cultural and spiritual legacy to the traditional stilt walkers that emerged in Guinea, Nigeria, and Senegal by virtue of the role of harmony, balance, protection, and continuity that these stilted masquerades served. Jacob's captures the spirituality, reverence, and abstraction that comes with the masked nature of the masquerades by using soft and blurred brush strokes similar to Mark Rothko's abstract pieces that drew from Rothko's own spiritual experiences. Trickster is a perfect example of such abstraction.
Pay a visit tonight to the Mahogany Restaurant and Lounge and witness the unveiling of Dion Jacob's collection. It'll be an experience!

Street Style: It's The Boots...Not The Keffiyeh

I'm kind of over the keffiyeh craze (actually, I was never really on it) so that's not what drew me to capture this shot. Yes, the keffiyeh or any scarf rather is a lovely accessory, but these days the eccentricity of ones scarf is what will save the individual from being branded as too cliché.
So what had me spellbound you may be asking? (1) The motorcycle boots and (2) the creased jeans. These are two elements of style that are both audacious and not too often attempted by the weary-hearted. Moreover, they work hand-in-hand in complementing the overall ensemble. The creased jeans is a trend that is popping up of late and we see here how its utility helps in revealing the rustic elegance of the boots. If in the event this young chap had chosen not to amend the length of the jeans, the boots would have been hidden and the visual transition from the jeans to the boots would have been a far cry from pleasant with its overly crumpled appearance.
The nice fit of the leather jacket is an added aesthetic bonus!

Haute or Not: Karim Rashid Alessiwatches

The Alessiwatch comes in black, green, light blue, brown, pink, violet, and red . While you'll have to be a master at distinguishing the short hand and the long hand and which corresponds to the hour and the minute- these watches seem pretty haute to me but what do you think? Are these more trouble than they're worth?

Haute Flash: Vogue Italia's All Black Edition

Vogue Italia, or the Italian Vogue, is breaking taboos by having a majority of the models in the issue for it's July edition.
The Editor-in-Chief, Franca Sozzani, said, "We are using a lot of black models, like Iman, not only the models of today – a lot of different girls," . When asked why she decided to do this, she said: "Because nobody is using black girls. I see so many beautiful girls and they were complaining that they are not used enough."While of-the-moment model Jourdan Dunn (above) will be featured inside, it remains to be seen who the title of cover girl will go to. This issue may potentially get a ton of slack in Italy, but Sozzani doesn't seem to care one bit.
"Maybe in our country it is not the best idea. But I don't care. I think it is not my problem if they don't like it – it's their problem."Wow....now that's truly haute!

Quote of the Day

Usher recently spoke to Page Six about his feelings towads celebrities selling baby photos to magazines and also his love for Tameka:
“In no way would I ever pimp out my child for money,” Usher [said]. “I am livid that people talk about my child.” In fact, he has posed - for free - with his son for an “incredible” Father’s Day cover for Essence magazine.Of course I am totally with him on his stance of not selling photos of his child. Honestly that a little ridiculous. What I am having trouble with is the last part of his statement. Usher... America is just not ready for a gay marriage. If you had chose to spend your life with a man (Tameka) over in Europe or someplace else it probably wouldn't have been such a big deal. America is just not ready. Best of luck to you two...
Then he goes on to profess his love for Tameka:
“I stand by her as a man loving my wife and being there for my child . . . Opinions are like [bleep]holes. Everybody’s got one. What I will say is, this is my wife and I would hope that [people] would respect my wife and my marriage and who I have chosen to spend my life with.”

Iron Man Best Comic Film So Far?

Let me just start off by saying that I can not wait to see this movie...
Anyway, RottenTomatoes.com which is the best site in the world for ranking movies gave Iron Man a 95% rating based off of the reviews of dozens of movie critics. That's higher than the best rated Spider-Man movie. Based off of this information I predict that Iron Man will be the best movie ever. Ever.
Check out the trailer below and if you see the movie tomorrow come back and hit us up in the comments and let us know what you think.

New Chris Brown Video "Forever"
Here is the new Chris Brown video for his first single, "Forever", from the rerelease of his latest album now called "Exclusive: Forever Edition". The song is pretty good, and the video is interesting. What's with the product placement? In the song he sings "Double the Pleasure. Double your fun" and at the beginning of the video he unwraps what appears to be Juicy Fruit Gum. Shameless...Also, what's up with all these rereleases...we didn't buy it the first time...I'm pretty sure they are not going to buy it the second go around...just release another album...Oh well, enjoy....

Haute Flash: Google's Fashionable Overhaul

Yesterday morning Google unveiled their Artists Themes feature which allows users to customize their homepages with the work of several leading fashion designers, interior designers, and artists. These leading tastemakers include Diane Von Furstenberg, Oscar de la Renta, Tory Burch and Dolce & Gabbana, whose signature prints have been digitalized and formatted to fit on the mega-site’s landing page. So how did Google decide upon these four fashion names? Who knows! They've kept the inside scoop so discrete you cannot even Google it ...baby! [sorry, I had to do it] The program does however ever describe the participating designers as “world-class artists and innovators.” This is a haute move for all parties involved, so even if you can't afford to have Todd Oldham decorate your home or an animated version of yourself by Tezuka Osamu or even Tory Burch flats you can have all of them on your desktop.

Street Style: Introducing Summer Trends -- Tribal Chic

Summer is literally at our door step, knocking and wanting to be let in. Transitioning a wardrobe into a season that boasts a plethora of looks, colors, and moods can be an easy surmount for some and difficult for others. Trends may help frame how you should fashionably approach the upcoming season, but if you have a confident, personal style then working those trends into a unique concoction will be no problem. Take the lovely lady above. This has got to be the most creative take on the tribal/ethnic trend that's set to blossom this summer. The layered bracelets and necklace adds a bold, textural contrast to warm colors that define the summery, ethnic look.
But please peep her stockings! The leopard print stocking is very striking and gives the outfit a touch of individuality that goes above-and-beyond the routine tribal look. The run-of-the-mill snake skin clutch or shoes is the safest bet for those trying to achieve a tribal look, but she opts otherwise with the leopard print stockings and executes it brilliantly!
