Rumor of the Moment: MC+NC=Getting Married?

Mariah's marrying Nick Cannon. Or so we've heard. She's been rocking a 2.5 million dollar, 17 carat-total weight stunner with a 10-carat center stone made of rare pink and purple diamonds.
An unnamed source has confirmed that the rock was indeed given to Carey by Cannon, as he overheard Cannon telling jeweler Jacob Arabo that they were betrothed.
One question:
WHERE did Nick Cannon get TWO POINT FIVE MILLION DOLLARS? Wildin' Out wasn't THAT funny!

Jimi Hendrix has a Sex Tape!

Wanna see some hot rocker 60s style love? Well, if you do you're in luck because Jimi Hendrix is coming back from the grave and putting Lenny Kravitz to shame! Okay, not really, but allegedly, legendary rocker Jimi Hendrix is getting into the vintage homemade porn industry.
A videotape purporting to show Hendrix performing sexual acts with two brunettes surfaced for sale on the internet on Tuesday. The ll minutes of film has been packaged into a 45-minute dvd to be distributed by--you guessed it--Vivid Entertainment. That's right, the same company that put Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian and Ray-J, and Pamela Anderson on the adult film map is trying to do the same for Hendrix.
This tape is causing more of a scandal than the R. Kelly tape.Vivid co-chairman Steven Hirsch, says the release of this film is great for the deceased legend:

This new movie shows that Jimi Hendrix could have been as great a porn star as he was a rock star,"

And of course, there are the denials:

Hendrix's longtime girlfriend from the 60s, Kathy Etchingham, vehemently denies that it's Hendrix in the film. She told the New York Times:
"It is not him.His face is too broad and nose and nostrils too wide for Jimi."

To authenticate whether or not it is Hendrix in the tape, Vivid brought in Cynthia Albritton, better known as "Cynthia Plaster Caster", famed for making plaster molds of celebrities' genitals, including those of Hendrix.

I swear. I can't make that ish up.

Fashion Breathes New Life Into McDonald's Image

Photobucket

Fancy that! McDonald’s is going for a new look, make over courtesy of designer Bruce Oldfield. Sean "P. Diddy” Combs and Tommy Hilfiger were the other designers considered for the job, but Oldfield is equally as talented, having dressed the likes of Catherine Zeta Jones and the late Princess Diana. The new McDonald’s uniforms that are set to hit only United Kingdom chains for the time being, is a move for an image overhaul the fast food empire is pushing for.

McDonald execs feel that wiping away their unhealthy and environmental negative perception can be achieved through fashion. In a bid to attract a more stylish and health-conscious stream of consumers to its doors, Oldfield has assembled a hip collection for McDonald’s that includes suits for managers complete with biscuit hue dress shirts and mocha or black colored ties. Polo shirts, blouses, scarves, skirts, and cargo pants in variations of mocha and black tints are in store for the wardrobe of Mickey D workers.

In my opinion, the collection is safe with the blouses and scarves for female workers being the only true sophistication from previous McDonald’s uniforms. Knowing that P. Diddy was in contention for designing the new uniforms, I’ll always wonder what the Mickey D’s attire would have look liked under the Sean John veil!

Street Style: The Art of Bespoke Suits

Photobucket

For our college student readers out there, what's fast approaching is the odd summer internship. To prep yourself to make that lasting impression, fashion (and performance too) can be your secret weapon. I stand by the saying looking good is good business because when you wear a suit that fits, you will notice an immediate effect in your carriage and confidence which will spill over into your approach to work.

Pictured above is a bespoke (or personally tailored) suit worn by yes, a college student. Calling to attention the nice fit of the suit is for my male collegiate peers because I see a majority of you wearing suits 2-3 sizes bigger than you. Jackets should not be billowy, but rather form-fitting. I'm not a big fan of the three button suit pictured (I'm a short chap so they look rather long on me plus a great deal of three-button suits are worn in a Bernie Mack, oversized style), but the fit makes me overlook that. For a safe mix of both corporate, yet fashionably edgy, go for a two-button suit. The three-button suit can put you at risk for that olden day, box-shaped appearance that does nothing to flatter your physique as a man. As Adam Rapoport, GQ Style Ediotr, puts it, the “[two-button suit] is a very smart conservative suit that’s cut with a dose of style.” So go for the two-button!

Also, the warm, summer months ahead means you can be at liberty to inject some fun into a suit once in a while. The floral pattern on the tie juxtaposed with an entirely black suit lends a relaxed, playful feel to the look. Perfect for casual Friday!

So heed my advice and that of the lovely folks over at GQ and Men.Style.com who put together a comprehensive How To Buy A Suit: The Complete GQ Guide. Enjoy!

J.Lo is not on a Reality Show

J to the L-O wants us to know what her life is like on the daily. But a reality series? Leave that ish to Flavor Flav, Khia, and Vh1.
The (former?) diva is set to star in a 'docu-series' on TLC about her life with husband Marc Anthony and the twins.

The show, which is currently in production, will give viewers a glimpse into the lives of Lopez and her husband, singer Marc Anthony. The series follows Lopez as she balances raising her newborn twins and launching a new fragrance. The singer-actress co-created the series and serves as co-executive producer.

"I am excited to be part of the TLC family," Lopez said in a statement. "I'm looking forward to sharing this exciting journey together."

Should be interesting. I really want to see the power dynamics in that house.

Usher "Love In This Club" Remix Feat. Beyonce and Lil' Wayne

Photobucket

This is the remix, and its definitely what's good. "Love In This Club" is already a number one hit, but this is sure to keep radio spinning this record. The remix features Beyonce who Usher refers to on the track as "Queen B" (sorry Lil Kim). The song also features a hot 16 from Lil Wayne and he even reprises "Call me so I can get it juicy for ya". Sounds like a hit to me. Enjoy, I'm sure you will.

New R. Kelly Video "Hairbraider"

To be honest, I had no idea R. Kelly was releasing new material after being all over radio last summer. He was on everyone's remix and had a few hot songs himself, and now he's back with this poor excuse of a T-Pain ripoff-song "Hairbraider" from his new album due out this summer entitled "12 Play: 4th Quarter". I have to say I'm very disappointed in R. Kelly for this ish. Shame on you, R. Kelly.

We Knew It+Solange Changes it Up

...the superstar duo quietly filed their signed wedding license in Scarsdale, N.Y., Friday afternoon.

"Yes, we did receive it back," Scarsdale Town Clerk Donna Conkling said. "We do have public information on our marriage applicants, and that's one of the things we can confirm."

The license, which arrived at Scarsdale Town Hall in the mail, confirms what we reported on the happy day: namely, that Shawn Carter made Beyoncé Knowles his missus.

While the nuptials took place well within the 60-day period the license was valid for (it was obtained April 1), their officiant did exceed the state law requiring the document to be filed within five days of the vow swap.

So let's stop the chatter already and start thinking of baby names!

Speaking of names, baby(mama)sister Solange is changing her name to SoL-AngeL for her next album. And she managed to score Cee-lo as a producer for this one, although she admits it was hard.

"I literally had to beg [record producer] Cee-Lo to listen to my music, but once he did, he signed on immediately."

Yea he probably took one look at Bring it On 3 and Solo Star and said 'yea right'. And who can blame him? But if this album does okay, then great. If not, he'll just forget it ever existed. Either way best of luck to both.

Chrsytler 300

In my young life there are a few things that I know for certain. Two of these are that ni99as* love rims and the Chrystler 300. In a match made in heaven, DUB Magazine and Chrystler have teamed up to created a special DUB Edition of the Chrystler 300 and Dodge Charger! I know, I'm excited too.

*NOTE: Its O.K. for me to use the "N" word because Nas said so. Seriously.

Introducing Karina Pasian: "16 at War"

Yes, she's 16 and at war with an industry hard to break into, but if her new single "16 at War" is any indication of the type of material we can expect from this young phenom than she is already winning the war. This song is gaining acclaim from critics and her unique voice is being applauded. No doubt she will draw comparisons to Tiffany Evans, but Karina is proving to be credible singer/songwriter. She was recently heard demo(ing) Cassie's news single, "Official Girl". She's signed to Def Jam and her new album will hit stores June 3rd! Check out her myspace to hear more about Karina. This is the official remix of Mariah's new single "Bye Bye" which is currently the fastest growing song at radio. I think a remix/reunion with Jay Z does this song well. Oh, and look for Mariah's new album, E=MC2, to debut on top of the charts this week with sales of 475K.

Roger Friedman, Oprah's Coming for You

Who is Roger Friedman, you ask? The Fox News TV columnnist who is accusing The Mighty O of starting her own cult.
Friedman was commenting on Oprah's weekly "web event" seminar with writer Eckhart Tolle, author of The Power of Now. He said that Oprah went on and on about the the author's new best-selling book "New Earth" one of the "most important books of our time" and the seminars "one of the most exciting things I've ever done".
That was enough to make Friedman lose it.

Friedman on Oprah's humanitarian efforts:

Imagine that Oprah considers her conversations with Tolle, a man with a shady and uncheckable background, more important than her schools in Africa and Mississippi for underprivileged children, more important than her Angel Charity network or her zillion-dollar syndicated TV show!

On her New Agey friends:

She's even gone into business with Kirstie Alley, whom she's planning to give a forum in her own talk show. She's also promoted televangelist Marianne Williamson's kooky 'Course of Miracles' and a book of New Age clichés by Australian Rhonda Byrne called 'The Secret.'[Oprah's] association with writer Tolle is way over the top.

And the kicker:
[in reference to Oprah's $260 million income in 2007] So what can she do besides anoint presidential candidates or start a religion?

Yea, I wouldn't be suprised if this man is digging out of a trash can next week in a circle of hobos saying 'you know, I used to be on Fox News'. OPRAH CAN TAKE YOUR LIFE! With her money and Scientology's level of crazy (you know they have her), she's got enough resources to blast you into never, so even your mama doesn't know you ever exsisted! Think man, thiiiiink!

Quick Quotes: Ne-Yo Is Bored With Urban Music

Ne-Yo

Singer/Songwriter Ne-Yo discusses the sound of his new album and states that he's actually bored with urban music...
"There's some stuff on there that sounds like something the Beatles might've done," Ne-Yo told Billboard. "There's some stuff on there that sounds like something Billy Joel might've done. I can't do just straight urban music no more, because to be completely honest with you, I'm a little bored with it. I'm just moving with what music excites me now."

"The records he's written don't just speak to young black girls," says Ashaunna Ayars, Def Jam's VP of marketing. "We're trying to build an adult audience that appreciates his music as well."

"My worry is that I'll do something that's so far left of what I've already done that it's going to go over my fans' heads. I pray that my fans are smarter than that."

Maybe I'm just not that big of a fan but I feel like this Ninja Turtle is getting too big for his shell. You're bored with music? Get the hell out of here and write some more female R&B songs that your manager suggested you not sing yourself.

Street Style: Corduroy -- A Seasonal Mainstay and an Eco-Friendly Option

Photobucket

World Earth Day is around the corner (i.e., April 22) and global community's heightened awareness of the Earth's environment could not coincide better with the flurry of interest being generated around eco-friendly fashion. Environmentally sensitive fabrics and production techniques are the new rave in these eco-fashion circles. Advocating these eco-friendly clothes/brands is one way to support the movement or one can simply adopt a frugal approach in how they meet with fashion and choose to define their style.

Even in the spring months, we see here that corduroy is still rearing its head proudly. Corduroy can be differentiated according to the width of its cord or the "wale." Finer-wale corduroy (as pictured above) is not too stuffy and can be transitioned into more temperate weather conditions. Nonetheless, corduroy's durability has made its use to be largely reserved for slightly nippier climates. However, the disordered, up and down nature of weather this year is an indicator that the environment is in a phase of change. As a result of the erratic weather, the corduroy fabric is becoming a mainstay look throughout much of the year sans the extremely warmer and humid months of summer. Experimenting with corduroy fabrics during the not so cold months of the year is not completely taboo (as previously thought) since it is a great way to maximize on the fabric's sturdiness and also practice conservation when it comes to our wardrobe. Let's face it, predicting a stretch of consistent weather has been tough to come by of late so safeguarding oneself against the elements à la corduroy is not a bad start.

Photobucket

It's not reserved for the wintry months. A navy cotton henley corduroy jacket makes an all to unfamiliar appearance in DKNY's 2006 Spring/Summer collection.

Is This American Apparel Ad Racist?

Photobucket

As you know we at Lenzism like to engage your mind and present you with new ish that is not only controversial but a tad bit disappointing. Yesterday fellow Lenzism writer, Chike-Ikechi and I came across this American Apparel ad that was just plain disturbing. Upon first glance it looks like a white model was painted brown and adorned with clothing from the international clothing gaint. After a while you begin to realize that American Apparel hired a African model and exaggerated her features. I have a hard time convincing myself that this image was used for marketing purposes. Kanye West just teamed up with Nike to release his much anticipated, Air Yeezy's, which are apart of his Glow In The Dark Tour with Rihanna, N.E.R.D., and Lupe Fiasco. These super kicks actually glow in the dark and are the first of Kanye's fashion ventures; he has a clothing line called Pastelle currently in the works. I'm going to give these a definite Haute! It seems as if Kanye can do no wrong these days.

Trouble, Trouble: Eddie Murphy Wants the Ring Back

Photobucket

Word has it that Eddie Murphy wants the 8-carat $500,000 canary yellow diamond ring he gave to Tracey Edmunds for their "engagement" for their "marriage". Tracey says Eddie can sit and spin, and is currently showing off her ring as much as she can in a big "F--- U" to her ex-"husband".

I wanna know, what does he REALLY want the ring for, to pay his child support or propose to Johnny Gill?

Addendum: I know I was killing it with the quote marks, but I just can't emphasize how fake that whole thing was. I mean at least stay married to your beard for a week Eddie! And a word of advice: If the marriage is fake, the ring should be too!

Omarion Dropped From His Label. Bow Wow Is Pissed.

AOL Black voices is reporting that Omarion was dropped by his label. Read the story here.

"O" Well! LOL.

Upon hearing the news Bow Wow reportedly screamed, "Oh Heeeeellll NO!" and then asked everyone in the room if he quote, "was going to have to cut a bitch".

Thanksfully Lenzism was able to obtain some footage of Bow Wow's bitch fit:

Street Style: Reinvented Expressions of Herringbone, Howard University

Photobucket

I seem to be on a jacket fixation of late when it comes to the gents. In the case of this jacket, why wouldn't you be! It's not only the jacket though that won me over, but the stimulating patterns that are tied together in a harmonious manner. However, the herringbone patterned jacket is what had me transfixed with the ensemble. A weave pattern such as herringbone comes with an aristocratic air that has made it an almost timeless fabric. Thus, the meeting of a herringbone weave on a mod, youthful jacket creates a vicious concoction of old school class blended with present-day urbanity.

Lil' B. Sure Singing Acapello

Do you guys remember Lil' B. Sure's performance from MTV's Rock The Cradle that we posted a few days ago? Well he's posted a new video to the net showing off his vocals and I have to say that i'm impressed. I don't watch the show but off of the clip that had been circulating around the net, I never would have known.

Quick Quotes: 50 Cent Calls Alicia Key's A Dumb B!tch

50

Well he doesn't actually SAY "dumb" bitch but you can definitely tell by his tone that's what he's thinking. And that's good enough for me.
"I don’t like Alicia Keys no more. If she thinks what they consider gangsta music is [made] to bring black people down then I think my sh*t falls into that category. I don’t like people who don’t like me. I don’t like her then because that’s what provides the life for me.

I think if you ask Ice Cube the same shit, he’ll tell you, “F*ck Alicia Keys” for even saying that. Because the success he’s had as an actor and a businessman, there was no opportunity for that sh*t without N.W.A. But I don’t think that [her] classical sh*t is cool. I don’t give a f*ck if you can classically play the piano. I haven’t been classically trained, because my upbringing, nobody put me in front of a piano at that time. If they did, I would know how to do it as well as she does. I could learn how to play the piano if I was passionate about it right now.

That’s obviously my perspective evaluating what she does, and I could f*cking care less about the sh*t. So she don’t like the music that embodies the harsh realities because they’re not her realities. She hasn’t been subjected to the same things".

Bill Cosby Drops A Rap CD

Photobucket

You heard correctly, Bill Cosby is dropping a rap CD! Although the 72 year old will not battle rapper Young Jeezy on a single, the legendary comedian and community activist plans to integrate positive messages from his books with a hip-hop, pop and jazz soundtrack. Releasing in May 2008, Cosby Narratives Vol. 1: State of Emergency is highly anticipated due to Cosby's criticism of hip-hop's negative content.
In dire need of a face lift, Hip-hop may need Bill Cosby to revamp the game. Don't quote me, but there are rumors Bill is "colabing" with rap-basher Alicia Keys on one of his hooks... This could be fresh!

Love, Peace, and No More Soul

The Soul Train Awards have been yanked from the airwaves with no explaination of why. The award show was scheduled to air its 22 show this year.

This is pretty sad. I definitely watched Soul Train growing up, but I have no idea who hosted the show after Shemar Moore, and that was like when? 1998?
Unfortunately, while some people are lamenting the loss of the award show, I can't really say I'm suprised. If most of the nominated acts don't bother to show up, and they're still nominating acts like BoyzIIMen that were good in their time but haven't put out new material in years, and then on top of that, no one's watching, it's bound to happen.

No word yet on if the ax on this award show will have any affect on the Lady of Soul Awards.

Khia Gets A Second Chance At Rapping

So Vh1 has a new show called Miss Rap Supreme. Conveniently, Khia is on the show. You remember Khia right? Well if you don't, here's a little something to jog your memory.

This clip of the show is AMUSING to say the least! I personally want a run down of the show requirements because if someone has recorded only one mediocre song, made up beef with other artists, and displays limited rapping abilities should they still be allowed to compete? I just don't understand how Vh1 can continue with these "So You Wanna Be A Rapper" shows after that White Rapper nonsense. I'm just so disappointed!

Naomi Just Can't Win

Okay everyone knows a few things about Naomi Campbell:

1. She's beautiful.
2. She's crazy.
3. She spits on people at airports because she's crazy.
4. She will kick your *ss with a cell phone because she's crazy.
5. She crazy.

All these facts aside, did you know she has a heart? Yes, Naomi flew to Brazil to donate blood, and they turned her away?

Campbell arrived at the city's HemoRio medical center on Tuesday to take part in the campaign to collect blood to combat Brazil's current dengue fever epidemic. The outbreak is the worst in the nation's history and has already infected more than 75,000 people and killed at least 80 in Rio state.

Unfortunately, the catwalker failed to read the fine print before hopping on the 13-hour flight on Brazil's TAM Airlines (not British Airways, from which she's reportedly been banned) to Rio to lend a hand—or vein—to the cause.

Officials were forced to turn her away because not enough time has elapsed since she had surgery in February for her to be eligible to donate.

Well damn! She just can't win! I mean, do they know how many budding young models she had to feast on to get that blood? If I were her, I'd be looking for a cell phone!

Bobby and Ray J Duke it Out Over Whitney

Oh yeah...they're fighting over this...

I guess Whitney's taking the Carmen Bryan approach for her latest comeback. Apparently both her ex husband Bobby Brown and her ex-boo Ray-J are dissing each other in their newest efforts. I guess being on that stuff makes it the best stuff!

Ray-J is taking the 'Is That Your Chick' approach in his new single 'Boyfriend'

Is that your wife, is that your shorty, well I'm her boyfriend . . . I think the problem is you don't beat it right . . . Making love is cool, just pull her hair sometimes.

Bobby, however, is keeping it 'classy'...in a tell-all book he wrote called
Being Bobby Brown: The Whole Truth and Nothin' But, where he lets the cat out of the bag about the former couple's drug use and Whitney's rumored bisexuality.

For those of you who want to know, I'm aware of the fact that Whitney had been seeing Ray J, a very young R&B artist who is most famous for being the little brother of Brandy, the multi-platinum singing artist and TV star.
Their relationship doesn't bother me. She's open to see whoever she wants to see, just like I can see who I want to see. I know the age difference between her and the little guy is 20 years, but to each his own. The only concern I had was how our daughter felt about the age difference. As long as she's cool with it, it's fine by me.

Ummm, there is so much wrong with this I don't even know where to start. But I guess if they didn't think that locking their kids out of the bathroom so they could get it in was bad, they probably didn't think it was bad to expose their teenage daughter to public infidelity either. And what I wanna know is, does Bobby coroborate the 'Supahead' story in this book?

Either way, there's probabaly a sex tape hidden somewhere just waiting to come out.

It's Not Looking too Good for Wendy

This Wendy Williams sexual harassment thing is too much. More people are coming out to support talent booker Nicole Spence's allegations against Williams and her (allegedly) boozin' and abusive husband/manager Kevin Hunter.

Spence, 29, said the last straw came after "his sexual propositions escalated into the obsessive. ... He constantly told me of his desire to 'f***' me and that he had been dreaming about sleeping with me. Mr. Hunter said I needed 'a real man in my life to mold me into the woman that I am supposed to be,' proclaiming, of course, that he was that man."

And the worst part is, she's still going to work at the station!
Most people would just say 'F a lawsuit' and get their ghetto cousin Pookie to spray the place with bullets. Maybe she should talk to A. Keys and get some lessons on how to be a revolutionary!

DESIGNER LIMELIGHT: CrooksnCastles8021

If you're in the Los Angeles area this is the hautest place to be in town!
When: Friday, April 18
Where: 8021 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046
Time: 9pm-when the last person leaves

To celebrate the release of their spring collection we here at Lenzism decided it was about time to give this Chanel and Gucci bashing brand some shine! Founded in 2002, Crooks & Castles is here to rebel against high fashion brands and take spins off of their trademarks and makes their clothing easily reached by the masses.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Can’t Stop the Crooks
We at Crooks & Castles have always routed for the villain whether it be in a movie, a comic book, a novel, a rap song or everyday life. Growing up in Los Angeles during the 80’s & 90’s we became a part of this villainous lifestyle. Gangs were everywwhere - the hood, the city, even middle suburbia. Most had no choice but to adapt to the environment. Some were able to escape or even channel what they’ve learned on the street into something lucrative. What caught our attention in the mid 90’s was independent fashion/graphic brands. After years of learning the in’s & out’s of the business by starting a brand without any knowledge of how to start or run a clothing company, we’ve finally come to this… “Crooks & Castles”!

More info and some of our favourite things after the jump!

The concept was easy. “Crooks”, criminals, pimps, hustlers, thieves, etc. And “Castles” those who got rich by becoming a crook. From the robber barons of the early times like the vanderbilts, the rockefellers, the carnegies to the modern day billionaires - Bill Gates & Microsoft. Those who stopped at nothing to get their “Castle”. We too hope one day to be the next rich crook. In some of our designs you might see a familiar icon or logo that we took (stole) and gave it our own twist. We felt that some high fashion brands only catered to someone in a certain lifestyle or with a rather large bank account. Therefore we took what they made and crafted it to fit ours. In all honesty… who cares. We just really wanted to make some… Hot Shit! We thank you for supporting Crooks & Castles. Please keep supporting the Crooks and we’ll keep servin up some hot shit!!

Here are some of our favourite Crooks ish that's out now!

Zaire Bi-Fold Wallet - Red, 40.
Photobucket
Collenglish- Red, 32.
Photobucket
Victory PSP Case, 32.

Crooked Angels- Black, 35.

At these prices, all this hautest comes at a steal! Just be sure not to get caught in Compton with all that red on!

EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Brandon Hines

l_32d1a2e4bfe2e5172b8992795ad159a6

Brandon's latest song "Cuttin' You Off:

Lenzism.com recently had the opportunity to sit down with up and coming R&B singing sensation Brandon Hines. In our exclusive interview we chat with Brandon about his life, his music and why he's more than just the "next big thing".

Also, Brandon has just been booked to open for Estelle on five of her U.S. tour dates. Find out where you can find them after the interview.

Listen and read our exclusive interview under the cut:

Cultivated in Motown, Brandon Hines and his refreshingly natural singing talent are campaigning for legendary status. With a recent feature on MTV’s TRL as one of the hottest unsigned acts of 2008, a special guest spot in the video for hit single “American Boy” with Estelle and Kanye West and over 1.8 million hits on Myspace, Hines smooth, tenor vocals and relatable lyrics has commanded the attention of many. Hines lulls his sultry love songs in a distinct, raspy tone that sets him apart from others in the current music climate.

Hines independent debut, Love Music: Fallin in Fallin Out has sold over 10,000 copies to date and currently available for sale on I-Tunes. Brandon Hines has worked with R & B singers Trey Songz, Cassie, Troy Taylor, Ryan Leslie and Johnta Austin just to name a few. Hines won the 2007 Who's Next Award at the major music conference in New York, and has been featured on allhiphop.com, concreteloop.com and singersroom.com, solidifying the obvious: fans are eager to hear more.

--
We’re sitting’ down with up and coming R&B singing sensation Brandon Hines. How are you doing today Brandon?

Doin' great man.

Can you let our readers know a little bit a bout yourself for those who don’t already know?

My name is Brandon Hines. I'm from Detroit, Michigan, born and raised there. I went to school for a couple years at Howard University… I put out an independent album called Love Music. Falling In… Falling out… And basically I’m out in NYC now just grindin' just tryn' to make things happen. I’m about to go on tour with Estelle starting this Sunday... I’ve also been featured on TRL as the hottest undiscovered acts in 2008. I'm so excited about that. That's the update on B. Hines.

How would you describe your sound? What makes you different than the current crop of young male recording artist such as Chris Brown and J. Holiday?

Umm... I would have to say that I 'm just a different person. My approach is genuine to me and definitely different than Chris Brown or J. holiday. Also my tone. I've been told by a lot of people that my tone and my voice are very different. Also, the fact that I’m like a college kid and my look. I think I have my own lane, a different style of music.

Where do you draw inspiration for your music from?

Well my approach is taking my life, what I go through, what my friends go through. If I learn a lesson from it or its something that inspires me I write a song about it. My goal is to relate and just touch people. I'm a real person; I’m not star status. I don't think I’ll ever be like that. The bigger I get the more humble I get. Ultimately its all a blessing; its all god. Me being a real and genuine person shows through my music.

Describe for me how your college experience influenced your debut album.

Actually, my time at HU is when I got comfortable. HU was definitely a great experience for me as an emerging artist. It's kind of like a microcosm of the world and black music industry. For me to be performing there, when we first cut Overdone (first single) the impact it had on campus inspired me to continue doing the album. I'm not good at expressing my feelings and expressing myself talking. Or I wasn't. Like in a relationship, I get choked up sometimes. In music I can sit down and think about it and the things I should or don’t say. What a lot guys don’t' say. What girls want to hear. Like talking about making love. Being real about every subject and everything.

You sold over 7,000 albums right?

Closer to 10,000 though. It was definitely a big accomplishment. One of my biggest, it lets me know that I can do it; I've done it before. So if I'm in a label or deal situation my biggest demand is that they respect my artistry and the product that I would put is what people and the masses will like. And it’s proven because people actively seek to find my music. People break into my e-mail to get to my music. I know what I’m doing people like. It can always get better and be enhanced but I want to stay on what’s different because my sound is different and I want to keep my individuality as an artist...

Well you ust have create a helluva lot of buzz for yourself. How do you get over 1 MILLION visitors to your MySpace page in such a short amount of time?

I keep in touch with my fans. I talk to them. I mean I was a marketing major; it's all about having a brand. I make sure the photos I have up there or the music is what people like. I test different music out. If certain things aren't hittin' then I change it. I talk to the fans and listen to what they want to hear. I work that page. It’s a result of me sharing myself. People want to hear that music, because it’s not on the radio, that’s why I think my page exploded so quickly. And I've had help. I've had interviews with ConcreteLoop.com, AllHipHop.com… Lenzism. I do a lot of different shows too, the more exposure I get helps.

So, how did you get involved with British R&B singer Estelle?

I met her about a year ago. I was on the Bailey's Get Together Tour with John Legend. I was traveling with my manager Kevin Madden and he introduced me to her and we just became good friends. She was tellin' me how she got put on and how she believed in my talent. When it was time for her to do the video she reached out to Kevin and said, "I want him to be in it". Now I got a good feature. She made me dance too [laughs]. I was really happy with that...

Did you get to meet Kanye?

Kanye is a cool dude. I really relate to him because he had to break through this industry so I’ve taken that and adapted that mind set. Regardless of when it happens its gonna happen. I'm not really worried about that. Kanye is definitely one of my idols.

What artist would you love to work with in the future?

I'd definitely like to work with Pharell. I've run into him a couple times but not on an artist level. Also, Robin Thicke and The Dream.

Are you currently working on a follow up album?

To be honest I have more than enough material to put an album together. But it’s about a time to be inspired... There are a lot of other things happening like touring; a lot of label situations that are coming up. I' just trying to make sure everything is panned out before I put out an album... I think sometime this year I will be putting out something... Even if it's an EP. I want it to be more incredible than my last album. Take enough time to make it a classic piece.

Alright man, with all the attention and buzz around you, you've got to have a crazy groupie or fan story to share.

Man.... That type of thing just stated happening recently. I want say any particular schools... Girls at my hotel... In my dressing rooms. Crazy stuff. But I'm a cool dude; I'm cool with that... I take the pictures. Chicks knockin' on the door at 5 or 6 in the morning... Crazy.

Alicia: She's Gangsta!

Apparently, A. Keys's is discovering more than just her sexual side. She's a revolutionary too! More from her Blender interview:

'Gangsta rap' was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. 'Gangsta rap' didn't exist."

She also has read several Black Panther autobiographies and wears a gold AK-47 pendant around her neck to symbolize strength, power and killing 'em dead." Um, Alicia, isn't that a little...gangsta? As in 'if you're so anti-gangsta rap, why are you wearing a gun around your neck?'

Her mama, however, says 'Black Power Alicia' is a suprise to her.
Keys' AK-47 jewelry came as a surprise to her mother, who is quoted as telling Blender: "She wears what? That doesn't sound like Alicia.

Of course, Keys is on vacation and unavailable for comment.

Al B. Sure's Son Chops Up Maxwell Classic

So MTV has a new reality show called Rock The Cradle. Not really a surprise, considering MTV rarely plays music videos now a days. The show is supposed to showcase the musical talents of contestants whose parents are known musical superstars, but I'm not too sure that the parents passed on the talent gene to their children. This Lil B. Sure (That's the stage name for Al B. Sure's Son) rendition of "This Woman's Work" starts off alright but sinks shortly after it begins. I love Maxwell and this is not Maxwell. I'm not too sure how many episodes is left of this show, but I hope it gets better as time progresses.

There is an interesting discussion going on at ONTD about why exactly the Beyonce' and Jay Z wedding didn't get the same amount of press as white celebrities would have. I don't know how accurate this article is but I think there is some truth to it. If it weren't for the black blogs I wouldn't have even heard about it myself.

What do y'all think? Is there a biased against black celebrities in mainstream tabloids or are The Carters just really good at keeping a secret?

Check out the article below:

A top tabloid editor tells me that Jay-Z and Beyoncé's wedding was played down by the weeklies because "African-Americans don't sell covers."

Of the big five celebrity glossies out midweek, only Us Weekly gave Beyoncé the top spot on the cover. Other magazines gave her second billing to the likes of Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Aniston.

"None of the magazines landed an exclusive on wedding pictures, which would have made the story bigger," said one tabloid insider, justifying why Beyoncé was relegated to a small cover box on his magazine.

But even wedding photos make less money for black stars, says another source. "Eva Longoria can get $1 million for wedding photos, but without the expectation of cover sales, Beyoncé might have gotten as little as $250,000 if she had sold hers," says a top editor.

Magazine publisher and black gossip pioneer Flo Anthony responds: "That sounds to me a very racist statement. Beyoncé is one of the biggest stars in the world, much bigger than Eva Longoria."

Anthony publishes Black Noir for women, as well as Toy Box, a black parenting magazine with a celebrity focus. She said: "It is hard for African-Americans in magazines. Only a few people, like Will Smith and Halle Berry, are mainstream. Editors really still think that only blond hair and blue eyes sell magazines."

As another tabloid source says: "We have a saying, 'Only Oprah.' Oprah is the only black celebrity big enough to put on our cover."

But Us Weekly editor in chief Janice Min tells me: "Janet Jackson has been on our cover twice, for two of our best-selling issues we've ever had."

Min is also the only non-Caucasian to helm a top celebrity magazine. She acknowledges there is a perception in her industry that black stars don't sell covers, but adds: "Typically, you will hear that discussion among a group of all-white editors.

No Bling? Beyonce and Jay Z without wedding rings... but why?

Okay so we know Beyonce and Jay Z got hitched, we also know the wedding party was described as "heavenly", and oh yeah we definitely know we haven't seen any rings! But where is the Bling???? She has been sighted flashing the 16 carat precious gem to fans after her hubby's Atlanta show (sorry, no pics included). No one has seen thee ring, I know right, not even Lenzism! Jay was seen in New York City without his "symbol of unity". People Magazine reported the couple exchanging vows on April 4, 2008 followed by a lavish party at Jay's Tribeca Apartment in NYC, and they're STILL denying the (true) allegations. Note to Beyonce: stop wearing black leather gloves to hide your fabulous rock! If you're married, you're married; if you're not, you're not... but you are, so show us the ring! If they don't start confessing this marriage and exemplifying their union soon... I'm totally over it! Who's with me? Okay I'm kidding, check back with Lenzism, we'll have the bling!

Ciara Album News- Crunktastic!

Photobucket

According to MTV, Ciara is at work on her new album, Fantasy Ride. First single, "High Price" featuring Ludacris will be released soon and is described as 'crunktastic', and Ciara is set to release her third album via Jive sometime in August or early September. Ciara's last effort, Evolution, did not do so well on the charts, but produced two hits, "Promise" and "Like A Boy". Only time will tell if Ciara will live up to the promise of her first album and its three mega hits, "Goodies", "1,2 Step", and "Oh", but I think Ciara has something to prove this go round.

Tyra Banks: Your Kids Will Be F*ckin'

Let me first start by thanking the Lord for giving Tyra Banks a talk show and America for realizing that being a supermodel and living out of touch with society for much of her life has given her the benevolent eye needed to give us average folk advice.

This clip is from an episode dealing with teen sex. Tyra lets the parents of a fourteen-year-old boy know one important thing: Your son is gonna be f*ckin' whether you like it or not. But, she does offer one nugget of advice, "having sex in school is not a good look."

Thanks Tyra.

Lil' Wayne Marketing Genius or Just Plain Crazy?

I'm kind of indifferent about this idea. I realize that Lil' Wayne is taking a shot and being creative, but this image is a bit disturbing. Honestly, I find it hard to believe that there just wasn't any other image that he could have used for his new album, dropping on May 13th. With this direction, its no wonder why his first single is about a "Lollipop". Coincidence?

Heart of the City: Jay Z's Atlanta Show After Party @ Studio 72

Jay-Z and Jermaine Dupri hosted thee "Heart of the City" tour after party at Studio 72, following Jay's Atlanta show on Tuesday. Definitely some major "bottle poppin" going on here! Studio 72 is one of the hottest clubs around A-town and has the pictures to prove it. As high-status it may seem, Studio 72 is designed for the unpretentious. Not uber classy, hence the white tees and Taliban scarfs , but nice! 11,000 square feet, 5 bars, and 4 VIP areas are not the only incentives at Studio 72. Because of JD's ownership, and Atlanta's celebrity residential areas, there are always celebrity appearances. Nelly, Usher, and of course Beyonce (although seen hiding in a corner) were present! What's with their whole "secret" marriage anyway? Besides that shenanigan, the show was crazy and the party was even crazier! For all of you ATL local celebs, Solo Entertainment presents: Skool Daze every Friday at Studio 72 Atlanta! Tell JD Ashley Elese sent you... AFTER you enter the club ;)

Celeb Hot Spot: STK (Los Angeles)

"Not your daddy’s steakhouse”, don't you just love the sassy slogan! STK is definitely an upscale A-list venue, thee place where Entertainment Weekly entertained their lavish guests while chewing on salmon tartars at their Grammy after party. As a side note, according to The Post Chronicle, Kanye ditches his guests at his own grammy after party just to hang at STK. With his latest clownery, soooo not surprised! Continuously cited by popular press, and lead by world-renowned chefs, STK is the modern steakhouse for the exquisite. Don’t kill yourself yet! You too can afford the finer eats in life with appetizers ranging from $9-60 dollars (oh, not to mention the dollar is the new penny… okay, now kill yourself) it’s affordable! STK takes steakhouse chic to a whole new level, attempting to merge this fresh genre with a stunning downtown lounge scene, sexy DJ in all!

If you’re ever in the LA or Manhattan area (soon to be Miami and Vegas), why bother with your “daddy’s steakhouse" stakeout at STK. Hey, maybe you'll see Kanye dining in his Bear costume?

Haute Flash: Mel B Launches Catty Couture Collection

Former Spice Girl and alleged Eddie Murphy baby mama, Melanie "Mel B" Brown, hosted a preview of her clothing line, Catty Couture, in Los Angeles yesterday. From what I've seen it's a lot of leopard print, and as a firm believer in using animal prints sparingly - I doubt I'd ever want an entire wardrobe filled with this feline inspired collection. Catty Couture has frilly leopard print tops, flowing skirts and funky tshirts based on Mel B's own wardrobe. I must say, the logo on her t's is pretty darn haute!

Beyoncé Pregnant?

Wedding Bells

Now this is all speculation so take it with a grain of salt. Personally, I think that there is a big possibility that this rumor might be true. Either they were really good at keeping the wedding a secret or there was a very big rush to put on the ceremony.
Did a pregnancy send Jay-Z and Beyoncé running down the aisle? Buzz is building that this weekend's quickie nuptials were actually a shotgun wedding. It would be the second for the Knowles' family: At just 17, Beyoncé's little sis, Solange, wed boyfriend Daniel Smith in the Bahamas after learning she was pregnant.

While reps for both J and B are neither confirming nor denying baby talk, the diva has indicated in the past that she'd like a big family: "I want to get married, and I really want a family. In a perfect world I'd have two boys and a girl."

If the newlyweds aren't yet expecting, they'll soon have plenty of time to practice. Beyoncé is wrapping up shooting for her role as Etta James in the film "Cadillac Man."

If they are expecting a child let's just pray that the baby doesn't come out lookin' like this tranny:

Mariah Carey "E= MC2" Album Review (It Bumps!)

Photobucket

Ced Says...

Bump These: "Migrate", "Cruise Control", "Love Story", and "Bye Bye"

Last Word: "E= MC2= G.O.A.T (Greatest of All Time)"

As I sit and listen to Mariah Carey’s new album, E=MC2, I am reminded why Mariah is the biggest selling female artist of all time having sold over 160 albums over her 18 yr-old career. It’s fitting, then, that the forthcoming disc’s lead single, “Touch My Body” , is Mariah’s 18th number one, which surpasses Elvis Presley’s 17 1’s making Mariah the solo artist with the most chart-toppers of Billboard’s singles chart's history.

In 2005, Mariah released The Emancipation of Mimi to rave review from critics and ecstatic fans who hailed the album release as “the return of the voice”. Indeed, Emancipation was a superior album with new Mariah classics like “Shake It Off”, “Don’t Forget About Us”, and the career defining, “We Belong Together”. More of my review of Mariah's new album after the jump!

Prior to Carey’s 2005 release, many thought that Carey’s career was over after several disappointing albums (Glitter, Charmbracelet), a nervous break-down, and a changing musical climate that gave way to the Beyonce’s, Rihanna’s, and Ciara’s of the day. Despite many counting Mariah out, she returned with an album that proved that she could not only be relevant, but also prominent.

Like the Emancipation, E=MC2 proves that Mariah Carey’s voice is just as impressive as ever, and her songwriting has kept up with the times but still manages to stay distinctively Mariah. This album is a lot like its predecessor, but better. The songs sound fresh, and the production is much more diverse.

Carey gets things started with opener-“Migrate” featuring hit-maker T-Pain. This is one hell of an album opener. I can see why they were nervous to make it the first single for fear of jumping on the T-Pain bandwagon, but this track screams radio-hit. Next on the line up is the album’s first single which sounds out of place after “Migrate” but, nevertheless, the song is pop genius.

Mariah is a lot more diverse, lyrically, on this album as well. I think the point with Mariah is: once in love always in love as she points out on the song “I Stay in Love”. She repeats this idea on excellent tracks such as “For the Record”, “Love Story”, and “I’ll Be Loving You Long Time”. However, if she should have to let you go, she wants you to know that she’ll be suffering “Side Effects” a song about the pains of a relationship gone wrong. This song is assisted by Young Jeezy who compliments this rock-tinged track appropriately.

Another side of Mariah is that she is inspirational as she shows on songs like “Bye, Bye” and “I Wish You Well”. On “Bye, Bye”, Mariah sings [“... and you never got a chance to see how good I done, and you never got a chance to see me back at number one…”] about missing her father, Alfred Carey, who died 2002. The song is meant to be universal for anyone who is ever lost a loved one. “I Wish You Well” is a track written by Carey and longtime friend and collaborator James Poyser. Here Mariah speaks about wishing an ex-lover well even after a bitter break-up citing bible verses and offering stellar vocals.

There is also the side of the album, where Mariah clearly wants to take us back to her Fantasy days. Sometimes she hits as on, “That Chick” a disco inspired r&b track, and sometimes Mariah misses as on, “O.O.C” which could have been left of the album entirely. However, Mariah has earned the right to indulge in her past because she provides R&B with such a great history and a promising future.

Overall, this album solidifies Mariah as one of the greatest artist of all time. Each track sounds like hit. Some are better than others i.e. the Swizz Beatz- produced “O.O.C”. Minus that track, this album is strong effort and will keep us listening to MC for the rest of 2008 which with material like this, I couldn’t be happier about.

Haute Spot: Nike "Being True- 22 Years of American Youth" Exhibition

Photobucket

“Being True – 22 years of American Youth” — Los Angeles

April 3rd – April 27th, 2008

144 LAB,
144 N. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90036

The camera never lies and that is why photography is the best way to capture raw, unfiltered authenticity. “Being True” is an exhibition presented by Nike which plays off this notion, bringing together 22 photographers who’ve used their cameras to capture a moment in time when a subject, completely devoid of pretense, expressed him or herself honestly and truly. Whether it’s a stylistic statement; a look of joy, thoughtfulness or anguish; or a physical movement, these young faces represent American youth culture in its purest form.

More info and pics after the jump!

Photobucket

In the spirit of the shoe that inspires those who dare to be different, curators Emma Reeves and Aaron Rose sorted through entries from 100 lens men and lens women and settled on a diverse go-to group. The exhibit reaches back 22 years and includes established, as well as up-and-coming photographers (and anything in between), What they have in common, and what makes their images so impactful, is that they’ve managed to capture, in the blink of an eye, a visual manifestation of “Being True.”

“Being True – 22 years of American Youth” features photography from:
Tim Barber, Angela Boatwright, Kenneth Cappello, Poppy De Villeneuve, Cheryl Dunn, Naomi Harris, Alex Hoerner, Drew Jarrett, Alain Levitt, Jeaneen Lund, Ari Marcopoulos, Dan Murphy, Jason Nocito, Patrick O’Dell, Mike Piscitelli, David Ransone, Terry Richardson, Jamel Shabazz, David Perez (Shadi), Brent Stewart, Ray Potes, Tobin Yelland. source.

The exhibition took place in New York and is now in Los Angeles.
